Conflict zone question

Greetings!
So I've recently been testing my combat skills in CZ's, and have some questions. Are the wars themselves on a timer or something? On several occasions I've won (or lost) several battles and when logging back on the war is over. Is there an actual final deciding battle? Looking in the right panel shows what side is winning, but seems like it never ends or only ends after I log off. I'm always afraid of picking a massacre mission with too many ships for fear of failing it.

Each war is a 'best of 7 days' affair. Each day is won or lost on the most war-related activity completed for each side during that day. A war can end earlier than 7 days if one side has an unbeatable lead i.e. 4 days to nil, or even 2 days to nil on day 6 (some days nobody may contribute to either side).

EDIT - each day starts and ends at the BGS server 'tick' which is currently at about 12:30pm.

A war or civil war lasts between 4-7 days.

Essentially it's the first faction to win 4 days that wins the war. The war state is part of the BGS (Background simulator).

Each day there is a 'tick' where all of the missions, bounties, trades, exploration data sales etc. is added up and then applied to the influence of each faction. It also adds up all of the war relevant contributions like CZ wins, combat bonds handed in, bounties, combat missions etc to decide who has won the war that day.

For more details check out the BGS section of the forum.

Yes I ran into the fail mission issue.
As others have explained why, my suggest is it's probably best to pick mission with lower kill numbers. I'd start with 10 or less and then if that goes well, increase the limit for next time, (or reduce it 😏)
