Conflict zones, please explain how they work.

So I tried going to the Turir system and take part in a conflict zone. Saw imperials figthing against system authority vessels. Me being a fed wanting to hurt the empire, I attacked the nearest imperial python. That wnet great it died. Upon it's dead every other ship in the conflict zone turned red and attacked me... what the..? I don't understand why that is. My poor viper limped back to port on 53% hull. also, when the imperial python died there was a light blue triangle up in the right corner of my ships display. No text though.

How do I get paid for destroying the enemies? I have read people talking about "combat bonds" to be paid upon destroying enemy ships, but I donøt seem to have gotten any from that imperial python I destroyed.

Someone care to explain how conflict zones work?

I dropped into a high density zone last night and didn't have a clue what to do as well ??? looked to be 2 small factions battling it out.

Choose a faction and then shoot the red buggers and leave the green buggers alone. You get 3000cr for each kill so pick your targets carefully. Once done, return to the station and redeem your Combat Vouchers from the Contacts menu.

Right hand panel, last tab (modules I think) , top of the list is 'choose faction'.
Had me stumped too for a while :)

Yea missed that on my 1st few battles too, the other side didn't turn red on me though, don't know how you got that, unless you grazed 1 of them too?

Btw can someone tell me the difference between the low & high intensity zones? They both seem to have about the same number of ships & the fighting intensity seems to be the same :S, at least in Durius anyway.

Aaaah....so that's how you do it :) I knew I had to choose but I couldn't find the right place.

Does anyone know if it matters which faction you pick? Does it have any bearing on rep in the system/overall? Thanks.

Apart from a mission sending me to one, and telling me the faction to side with, I've never just popped into one. Looks like there could be some money to be made there.

1. Arrive
2. Hoist a flag for a faction (on your right hand menu). If you don't do that people think you are sneaky and either kill you or post about it on the forum
3. Yell 'come and have a go if you think you're hard enough'
4. Survive the opening onslaught until your virtual team mates become more interesting than you
5. Kill red targets
6. When many red targets are dead and before your hull gets to 0, go to nearest station and visit the local combat bond office for pennies.

Note. If all the radar contacts go red, you messed up. Run away.

Thanks for the heads up :) Wondered what the faction option was for. I thought it was for some sort of future option where you could choose Federation, Empire or Alliance.

cool thanks! Next time I will 'oist me flag and blast away. I did actually defeat a cobra player there in my second visit. He got away with 18% hull, that was pretty fun

Okay so I battled for some time until I had no ammo left. Got 33K combat bond, pretty measly reward. And it doesnt seem like we get any faction rep from it. Can anyone confirm this, that no faction rep is gained by killing in conflict zones?

Choose a faction, but it has no effect on anything, not even your rep with the faction for whom you fought. Pretty pathetic.

Second attempt at combat zone today, after successful sortie in the Cobra yesterday decided to give the Asp a go. Got totally pummelled in the first 60 seconds, 1.2 mil rebuy cost and somehow picked up a 133k fine with the Pilots Federation (?). Did take the mission from a BB at LFT 926, so maybe the fine was for failing the mission or maybe I chose the wrong faction. Think I was killed by a CMDR btw. Not at all butt hurt by it, managed to do everything wrong when I entered, didn't even manage to deploy my hard points, and learned something. Tomorrow I'll be going back, in my Cobra, or maybe my Viper :)

yeah, it's too bad. It's pretty fun, but horrible reward, and no faction rep :/

I found Viper a pretty good choice. Has a good deal more shield than the cobra and much better handling; same amount of equal weapon mounts, but better hardpoint placement for fixed targeting. Viper is also much cheaper to replace if destroyed, and a bit cheaper to repair. A serious drawback is vipers max boost speed 400 compared to Cobras at 420 or more + cobras power distributions seems to be able to recharge faster (meaning almost constant boosts with max boost speed is possible even with only 3 pips to engine)

The stakes should definitely be higher in combat zones, I think. Much better money can be made elsewhere doing safer stuff - which is actually fine with me, soldiers aren't paid terribly much. But it should absolutely have an effect on faction rep, and on the various knobs and dials behind the war.

I think you should also be locked into your faction choice once you're beyond a certain point - maybe after gaining/losing enough rep. Tough noogies if you picked the losing side. On top of that, I feel like the major factions would take note of who you've been playing mercenary for - the Federation shouldn't just say 'eh, whatever' if you've been actively fighting for an Independent faction in rebellion. You should lose rank FAST.

With that said, combat zones are hecka fun. ^^ I've found a civil war near the fed/imperial border in a binary star system - the independents are based entirely around the secondary star, while the federation loyalists control the stations around the primary. I'm watching it to see if it might swing one way or another.

There is no faction rep..however, the numbers on each side killed SHOULD matter (the winner should be the side that killed the most). It has been pointed out that any conflict zone SHOULD cause a win, and guide the devs on the outcomes of injected plots, and station/system faction ownership. As with anything dealing with the background simulation currently...your mileage may vary.

You can get faction rep for war zones, just need to take missions that ask you to kill x number of war zone vessels.
