Newcomer / Intro Conflict Zones?

Hanging around Eravate, looking for a station to buy some Gold or Palladium in order to help out beginners,
I noticed a Civil War next door in Apoyota. "Huh", I thought and set course. Low Intensity Zone. Now what?
Ah, I need to pick a side, yes? So, who is it going to be? Probably the one aligned with the Federation, as I'm
allied with them and want to keep it that way (why? why not?) so - after looking at the system info to be able
to make an educated guess on the matter - I pick someonesomeonecan'tremember.

Whole scanner turns red. I single out a - now - enemy Python and manage to make it go boooom amidst all
the crisscross of lasers and stuff around me. There go the shields, mine now. Same for the hull, too.
Ejecteject and apparently I got killed by a CMDR who I'm pretty sure arrived after me. I had seen the hollow icon
but I could swear it wasn't red

My question marks are kinda between the lines here but... in a nutshell:

How-To Conflict Zones?

I think he was on no side whatsoever. But yeah, bummer. My first actual hostile encounter with a player in almost 4 months ever
and I didn't even get to fire one single nanojoule of laser at him :(

The real question however: I returned and picked the other side which had me kill ships much more leisurely but that
surely can't be the way we are supposed to play with this mechanic? Or do we/do you playplay with it?

I was in a zone there... I accidentaly killed a pc eagle. A couple of npcs were shooting me while i was killing a conda. I turned and wasted the first red i found before realizing it was a pc...

Typically in a zone all players are on the same side. If you are the only pc on the other side you are asking for trouble....

I usually suggest to new players to leave and change sides....if i can in the battle heat.

I was in a Python. I am very sorry if i killed you and i can pay in cargo for your insurance if you want me to...

I totally was in an Eagle and there's no way I got killed by a Cobra - must have been a Python:
It's just that I have this gem-crusted Eagle so that'll be 700,000 please, thank you very much :D

It's all good, I lost a Vulture, whatever. Right now, I can afford to lose three more but I'd like to be prepared for all-things Conflict Zone the next time

Nice gesture!

Well, a master vulture attacked me while i was typing to him. I took his shields down and some hull damage before he fled. I am sure he was not CMDR PURF though...

Nah, that wasn't you (or me). My combat rating is Expert and I only fired on (and killed) a Python before I blew up.

Anyways. I returned eventually, picked a different Zone which had the Federation in more even numbers and
the tables somewhat turned along with me swatting two player piloted Eagles. Just an overall ... unglamorous
experience, my first dipping of toes into PvP waters ... ah, well.

High intensity zones seem a fairer fight as there are greater numbers of both warring factions particularly if you want to be aligned with the weaker faction. Low intensity seems to mean greater numbers of one side and you do find yourself very outnumbered. I jumped into a low intensity zone picked my faction and was immediately despatched by those damn Zulus, 1000's of 'em!!! I didn't go back in a hurry. ;)
