Conflicted emotion about Odyssey has been somewhat of a roller-coaster for me since its release.
On one hand I want to abandon the game due to frustrations I experience due to poor optimisations:
Then on the other hand:
Let's all try to look forward to the next few months, and keep our spirits up..
On one hand I want to abandon the game due to frustrations I experience due to poor optimisations:
- Poor frame rates (i experience teen frame rates in stations and POIs, sometimes dropping to single digits on occasion)
- Poor optimisation of planet tech, with aliasing artifacts, creasing issues (where joins are notably misaligned) and popping of planet assets like rocks ect is seen. Planet surfaces that seem to mold/morph on their own as you walk across the surface, with rocks moving as part of this adaptation.
- Lighting - Everywhere just seems much darker. Arguably, this produces an accurate representation of space travel. However, the emissive lighting and light diffraction seems off, with gamma correction also not seemingly optimised
- The SRV control mechanics seem to have changed - i experience the SRV glitching to maximum speed despite my thruster at a low setting and movements being small.
- Bio scanning does not seem to be well thought out. It's tragic that i have to waste a lot of time searching 3 areas that contain the same species, at the same time, i could come across other species but am unable to scan it in fear of losing the partial scan of the other species that i already hold.
Then on the other hand:
- The on-foot experience can certainly provide a sense of scale, and seeing your ship from and on-foot perspective is a wonder to experience that's for sure.
- The higher fidelity in graphics on ships, star-ports, planets etc is definitely a step in the right direction. Even the small details like the flashing lights on your ship is a very nice touch
- Ambient in-game darkness: I have to say, in a lot of situations, i really don't mind the darkness so much. After all, space is dark. Here is a mind twister for you: nighttime is the natural brightness of the universe, it's only the sun that artificially lights our planet, providing the light we know. No sun, no light!!
- Planets - I have recently started exploring outside the bubble, and i have to say, the few landable, atmos planets i've landed on have almost been perfect experiences; the planets have been rich with features, the sunsets have been awesome, the plant life discovered have been varied - I've even found canyons and rocky/mountainous terrain, not the flat terrain i mostly found in the bubble. These experiences have encouraged me more than ever before to seek and scan systems that i found a bit boring in Horizons.
- Carpet bombing settlements - if you have never tried this, i encourage you try, it's a surreal experience.
Let's all try to look forward to the next few months, and keep our spirits up..
