Horizons Confused about Colonia and registering

I went to the Colonia webpage and registered under a faction name. Why is that necessary? Am I in a faction now? I'm totally confused about the entire Colonia thing other than it's essentially a new colonized area without PP (yay!)

Can anyone shed some light on what the deal is?

There should be a CG going live today. Your contribution will count towards the one you registered with. The top 10 of the first round will become factions with a base. Further rounds will take the top 3.

are the factions their own independent factions or will some be allied to the superpowers. (hoping for an alliance group)

All will be independent. No powers or major factions in Colonia.

(there are some branching from the alliance though)

I haven't bothered, I know none of them, I don't know their purposes or aims, their reasons, except for SDC, and gankers and griefers are the last thing we need in Colonia where it's most exploration and you can't outfit a decent fighting ship if you tried. The entire thing is artificial and, basically, boring with no attraction at all for independent players, why would I fight for someone else's desire to invade my home?

This reeks of xenophobia.

Nobody is invading your home. Whatever star port you may be renting an apartment on. They are setting up their own homes in your neighbourhood.
If you want to be all on your own you should probably migrate to one of the Colonia Connection bases. Maybe one that's far off course with the lowest traffic.
But don't complain about the lack of services and development there.

Imagine if Jaques ran his station like that. He wouldn't have any customers. Colonia is a tourism hot spot. There are thousands of strangers "invading your home" every day.

Also this is an opportunity for you to build your very own home and move out of that apartment (or living in your ship if you can't afford that like me).
There are many entirely new groups that bring together people you've been living alongside with in Colonia from the very beginning attempting to build new surface ports.

Maybe take a look around?

Ooh tetchy, lets wait until SDC get out there and gank all the explorers then we'll see who is and isn't invading!

Been in Colonia since before it was Colonia, didn't feel the need to look for people then, don't feel it now. Some people just enjoy the peace and quiet of being out in the black. There should be remote outposts scattered around the place where few people go, where a person can just hang around not bothering other people, for a while I thought that might be Jaques, but apparently not. Oh yes,and do you really think Jaque is interested in customers? He was trying to move his entire station to Beagle Point, I suggest he and I have a lot in common, and I expect once it gets a bit crowded here he will be moving on!

It's not necessary at all.
Only if you have your own minor faction, that you want to be established out there, or if you want to support some specific faction on the list.

Factions are entirely unrelated to that as some of them have already been out here and doing exactly that.

Me too. Yes, this is probably not that lone station out in the black. I suggest going for the bases on the colonia connection, doubt they will see much colonisation.

Jaques has always been a tourist attraction and he was headed to beagle point - essentially another tourist attraction. I doubt he would still fly an entire station with habitation rings and a bar as well as selling his quinentian still if he wasn't looking for customers. Of course he may move on at some point.
