Confused about hardpoints, and why i should use a peterson hauler

hey guys,

I upgraded from a peterson Hauler to an Adder, and i was wondering what is the point of ever using a Hauler again? And if no point, is it right that any ship should be made so obsolete by another one?

My second question is, what's the difference between a medium sized hardpoint and a small one? As far as i can tell, any weapons i've seen so far fit just as well on a small hardpoint as they do on a medium one, what am i missing here?

Thank you for any answers received.

The Adder has made the Hauler look pretty bad I have to agree with that.

You can fit Class 2 weapons on a medium hardpoint but not on a small hardpoint, I think.

The point of flying a Hauler is because it's damn sexy :) Seriously, look at its cute little fat a.., I mean bottom. And the sound of it! So spooky. Just lovely.

No, I'm not saying the Hauler's a good ship. But I'm loving it and considering to permanently adopt one if I can somehow squeeze it into an explorer role...

What i miss from my hauler is the Yellow terrain colour i bought for it and the fact that my seat was situated in the centre, but i admit i love my adder, it just feels like a long distance ship, it's robust yet smooth, i don't think it's ugly at all as i have heard some say. Thanks guys.

Edit* Oh and i miss the hauler windows, hard to believe i used t othink they were a bit restrictive, the Adder compared to them is like looking out of Robocop's visor.

You will see that many ships get obsolete as you progress. Some because of they don't fit the task (Haulers -> Bounty Hunting) or the more expensive one is superior in any/many ways (Cobra -> Asp). Looking that way it's no surprise that you won't fly many ships again after you upgraded to its' big brother.

This is true but I think the point is that at only 30K more expensive than the Hauler, the Adder basically makes it not even worth consideration at the start. Far better to trade to that 88K instead and have a much superior ship until you get the Cobra.

Maybe a price cut in the Hauler could be in order, down to say 35-40K.

I think that's a good idea although i made 13k a journey sometimes in my hauler by taking missions, so maybe it's the Adder that should be more expensive, might be too late for that maybe though. or perhaps some sort of longer jump distance for the hauler, not sure.

What's the jump range on the adder? If less than the hauler then the hauler remains a cheap viable way for a rookie to travel out of the starting "bubble" some have difficulty escaping.

I DO miss my Hauler but if you want to progress you have to change ship. I still remember the sound it made when flying/boosting/jumping, like a wooden ship caught in harsh weather, it crackled and whatnot and it was great to fly it. Easier to fly too compared to my cobra because its not as large.

I'm kind of disappointed with the jump range on the Adder, I kept my hauler when I bought it and I think I'll keep the hauler as a long range personal transport, once its stripped out and I've fitted the best FSD I can find for it hopefully it'll be a great ship for shuttling me between my trade ships. The adder can't carry any more (I think) but its extra weapons means I can break up trading with some light bounty hunting and such so I think I'll prefer it for trade grinding.

I agree. I think most will simply bypass the hauler, or use it for a day or so before upgrading further. Am surprised that the Adder is so obviously an inexpensive upgrade to the hauler, rendering the latter a bit pointless. The same can't be said for the Lakon 6 -> 7 -> 9 upgrade path due to massive differentials in pricing.

I disagree. I see NO reason to use the ADDER. i run my side winder, hauler, Cobra and Type 6 without weapons and just run for it when interdicted whichnis pretty easy if u upgrade PD (and i play ironman mod). All these ships will be sold when i buy the next, except SW but i will strip it. Once i get an ASP i will start to rack up some kills and kill interdictors and i will also then buy a Viper, all A list and start bounty hunting but the only ships i will own is a Viper, ASP and then prob a Python and Annaconda, but since my wipe last weeken im just trading and exploring until i get my ASP.

The hauler is sprucy as hell, and it has won my heart over the Cobra just for its amazing maneuverability/cargo capacity ratio. Being small, fast and agile is sometimes better than drifting around in a huge ship. Fuel costs might be insane in the Adder. Dunno.

Haven't tried the Adder, but I'm sure as hell this time around I'm sticking to the hauler for a good while.

Nah, ship pricing is something I'm sure they'll be massaging for a while yet :)
