Newcomer / Intro Confused about 'Hostile'

So, since I've pledged to a superpower, I get that those superpowers who don't like mine, would maybe take some kind of offense at me being in their system, however:

1. Nobody attacks me.
2. Just because I pledged to superpower A - how does superpower B-Z KNOW that just by a ship warping into their system?
3. If I'm hostile, why are the stations allowing me to dock / fighters allowing me to dock unhindered.
4. I'm not seeing any increase in interdictions or NPC's getting up in my grill because I'm 'hostile'.

So basically, what's the point?
 
The hostile displayed on your HUD is just a warning to you that powerplay ships in that system might take exception to you, but it's very rare to actually see one, and if you do, it's rare for them to actually do something. Basically, you can ignore the warning.

The ships in any system don't know that you're "hostile". The same as what you do, they scan you and then find out that you're from a different power.

It's different with real players. If players from another power spot you, you had better be prepared for battle. Mind you, many will attack you for nothing, so no difference there.
 
superpowers in elite dangerous are federation, empire and alliance. you can't pledge to those.

you can pledge to galactic powers, individuals, which might be prime minister of the alliance or president of the federation in their dayjobs, but are neither identical with the superpowers, nor connected to the superpower alligned minor factions.

the president of the federation (or the emperor of the empire) control and exploit alliance systems in their private time for exampel, like the CEO of sirius corporation.

that said - d8veh is spot on; being hostile in powerplay doesn't change much, differently to being hostile to a minor faction (which will, for exampel, not allow you to dock at their stations). it's a bit crazy that both status read "hostile" on the hud.

I lol'd about your comment about players attacking anyway d8veh, 'cause a) it was funny and b) I've rarely seen one, let alone got in a fight with one.

So I can safely ignore (yet another) part of the UI. Ok, cool. At least I can stop silent running into stations when I see the hostile warning displayed! :)
 
You can be attacked if you are carrying Powerplay preparation materials or bonds related to Powerplay kills. If you show as hostile in your local system, you will find that if you are attacked, you can't shoot back without becoming wanted. If you're wanted, sysauth will shoot at you. Powerplay NPCs hang out in RESes and around stations, so be vigilant. It can get ugly really quickly in those locations..
 
'Hostile' is about as dangerous as 'Speeding' in my experience :)

Still, there's always that chance of a nasty interdiction and it's probably best to pick a different system for activities that leave your ship vulnerable like surface prospecting, once had a Python chase me off a planets surface back when I was briefly loyal to that Disney princess, it wasn't pleasant...

...tore the my little pony off my dash and dropped it out of the window after that encounter. Went and joined the Feds and shaved my head....

Leave the area bubble and into different bubble and you will see what SF fighting is all about. lost my Conda 3 time cause of that

off topic but... be careful speeding if there are CMDRs about, all it takes is a touch and it is rebuy time.

Nope, he's saying if you hit a small unshielded ship (or a small ship hits you) and you destroy it then you get a bounty and the huge and insanely powerful station weapons will take exception and flatten you in about 2.5 seconds.

In popular systems with real players (community goals etc) there are some people that deliberately fly cheap ships on 1-5% hull and try to hit other speeding vessels so the station attacks them.

This was one of my experiences with an imperial Eagle on 9%. Actually spoke to the guy on reddit a few days after and discussed a few things like how my Conda was running so cold :)

You see him go silent running, then he tries to get out of my visual sight. He realises I'm stationary and tracking him. I get bored and decide to head out safely under 100m/s. As I speed up still well within the safety zone towards the end of the vid you see the shield impact and you hear a muted "boom" as he flashes up on the radar and I target him for just a second before "1 contact lost". If I had been speeding I'd be marked as wanted and would start taking fire from the station.

In other words, players in this game can be "male chickens". And even in solo it's possible to accidentally boost into an NPC sidewinder and kill them.

I do speed but almost exclusively when no other players are around, even then I'm all over the radar ensuring there are no surprises. :)

That's right except the bit about destroying them. Once they've touched, they boost into the side of the station to blow themselves up. You take the rap for it.
