I really am looking forward to getting into YouTube, but there's one thing that absolutely flummoxes me. How do I edit videos, when Windows Movie Maker appears to be gone? Are there any freeware options out there?

I am really confused. :s

All I want to do is add subtitles, and clip the videos so I can cut to the good parts.

Any help is really appreciated. I'm still a newbie, so I have a lot to learn.

I know everything else I need. I already have all that, bar capture card. (Xbox)

Obviously I have a PC as well.

I don't think WMM is 'gone'. Have a look in the Windows 10 photo app, I think that's where it's hiding, in a very basic form.

As for the best freeware... as much as I have always pushed open source/freeware, I finally bit the bullet a few years ago and bought the Adobe suite instead of gathering all the open source freeware I needed (often switching every couple of years out of necessity), and have never looked back. If you are serious about video editing, and can afford it, find a reasonably priced package. Or buy a mac, no, don't... I think part of my soul just died.

what i do is use a free app called handbrake to compress my vids for quick download
once downloaded onto you tube it is very easy to edit subtitles , clipping , music , etc

Wait, you can add that on YouTube? Well colour me blind! Didn't know that!

I use daVinci Resolve for editing and captioning videos. It is a paid for product for large production houses, but they have a limited freeware version that will work just fine for what you want to do. (The limitations are around 4K and 3D videos, and things that a production company would need)

To use it, just import the videos on the media tab, then go to the edit tab and double click a video to bring it into the viewer and set in and out points, then drag it onto the timeline. If you like you can just drag the video onto the timeline and drag the ends instead. To add captions, add a text layer (it's in the effects section, scroll down) and change the properties and everything, which lets you select the font and size, and position. When you're all done, go to delivery and export it - there's a YouTube preset.

It does way more than this, but that's the basics to start you off. Look at the Goats Eye View tutorials for more detailed help.
