Newcomer / Intro Confused about Odyssey installation process

So I did it, I bought odyssey. Let's see if I am going to regret it or not... :D

Anyways, the thing is, I am pretty confused what is happening right now. I downloaded the thing via steam, and it took like 2 hours with my internet speed at 8MB/s.
Then I start the game, the launcher comes up, and it gives me the option: "Odyssey - Install".

So when I do that, the game downloads again, with a time estimate around the duration it took for the initial steam download.

Am I downloading the game twice? What did I download with the steam client then? Do I have to clean up some trash that is left somewhere in the depths of the on my hard disk now that was downloaded by steam?

What am I missing here?

Are you starting the game from Steam? I had this issue when I first installed, but didn't launch from Steam. Don't forget that after the initial install, there is a ton of update installers to also install. It takes ages.

@Dreepa It depends on "how you bought it and where"

Basically this is how FDev choose to solve the problem it seems.
  • You have to install the 'base game + launcher' from the store (Epic/Steam/Fdev/Other..)
  • You have to update it with addon products through the Launcher, such as Odyssey (which is an 'addon-game/DLC' kind of), to the core game.

Hence two download processes.

Odyssey should be delivered via Steam, so make sure that you actually own the DLC on Steam. Also ensure you have the DLC installed from the game's properties in the Steam client:

If that fails, I dunno. If no one else can help sort it, contact support or just let it install again I guess.

this is normal..

I've just returned from being away from the game for 18 months - I had to go through the install odyssey wait before it would run, but could run horizons without the installation.

Its just the way the loader deals with content.
