Horizons Confused by how to rank up

Been playing over a month doing missions for Federation allied factions, and my rank hasn't increased one bit. My rank bar says 100% but rank says 'None'. So I watch some more tutorials that say just keep doing missions for Fed allied factions, but still nothing happens. So I contact Support and after a few days I get this response:

"Looking at your account, I can see that you're more than ready to jump to the next Federal rank. In fact, you're ready to jump a few Federal ranks! However, rank up missions are a special type of mission that also includes Engineer invites and permit acquisition missions. You'll only have one of these missions offered to you at a time.

This means you should complete the Engineer invitation mission currently waiting to be completed, along with any permit missions. You should then see Federation rank up missions offered in Federation systems"

I don't get it. No one else has said anything of the sort... I have to do engineer missions to begin to rank up? I've already did one a couple of weeks ago, but upon checking they weren't allied with the Feds, so I can only assume this means I have to do one who is allied with them? If this is true how did people rank up before the engineers were a thing? Also I have not received any permit acquisition missions of any sort. Am I supposed to get these after I do the engineer mission? How come nobody else is saying anything about having to do engineer missions to rank up?

Confused! But I know you good folk will set me straight. Please ;)

Sounds "jobbie" to me - however, to bypass any "pending engineer missions" - why not just load up E D instead of Horizons, that way no engineer stuff should intrude and you should see fed navy missions appear.

ok i will try to help you....here goes, judging by your msg it seems you have 100% rank but no promotion mission offered to you,but you also need to be allied with federation superpower ie:reputation bar to the left side of federal rank.....so to get federal reputation instead of rank, you need to cash in bounties for the federation super power.....it takes around 200k for 10% of reputation, when your reputation reaches allied, then a quick log out/in should drop you a federal mission, complete this mission and you'll instantly receive a promotion to your next fed rank....hope this helps ya out

Cheers for your help mate, I am already allied with the Fed superpower 100% so this leaves me to conclude I just need to do some federal navy missions in order to get things moving then... I had better get on it. Thanks again to you both for your suggestions :)

yes mate.....if you got fed navy missions spawning then your all good to go because all fed navy mission are promotion opportunities, but they dont always mention rank up,sometimes they just appear as regular mission with no mention of promotion but they are always for promotion.good luck cmdr.

................... you also need to be allied with federation superpower

No that is not so - I recently started a new commander and I have ranked up to petty officer and I was only cordial with the federation and now only friendly - so no you do not need to be ally of the major power.

For me it was simple but grindy. It wasn't that long ago I got Petty Officer in the FedNavy but things change fast around here. Feel free to correct any errors.

On your panel there is "Rank" for the Feds and Imps. Do a mission for any faction that has the Fed or Imp symbol by their name on the mission board and it gives you rank in the respective power.

Once your Rank bar is full, you need to do a mission with navy implications. I'm not sure if they say so directly in the title now but they used to say "military" or "navy" in the wording somewhere IIRC. When you click on the mission it will tell you that a military rank is at stake. When you successfully complete the mission you'll get a message telling you of your change in rank. Your Rank bar will reset when you level up but if you had any experience that was exceeding the rank you were working on, it will show up as a partially filled bar for the next level (that is any work you do waiting for the ranking mission isn't for nothing).

I don't recall if my status with the Feds was a concern or not. I think I was cordial with them for awhile so maybe it didn't affect my getting the ranking missions.

And I never aligned with anyone in the Power Play sense.

I can confirm that just by doing 2 navy missions tonight I have ranked up twice from Recruit to Cadet. I wonder how far I can rank up now based on how high my rank bar has actually spilled over due to the work i've already done.

Does anyone else find that support message absolute rubbish? Since when do Engineers invitation missions affect Navy missions for promotion?

OP was able to find Navy missions, so they were clearly not blocked.

I certainly found it a bit odd which is why I thought i'd ask you guys. At first I tried using regular ED as MalcYorks suggested and found the first Navy mission to do.. however I believe there were Navy missions using Horizons before but I wasn't looking for them to rank up. But the second Navy mission came up using Horizons anyway and no need to visit the engineer. :/

I think the support guy was mistaken. All you needed was to do the Navy missions. They only start coming up when you have a rank promotion pending.

Oh well, you're good to go now :)
