Confused ... cutting maglock in opening mission

This is early stuff and doesn't bode well for me. The mission asks me to get out a cutting tool, and then to cut the maglock on a rover to retrieve a battery.

Okay - so I get the tool out and locate the maglock. The game identifies where I can activate the cutting tool and, once activated, only allows me to cut a set range across the lock. I hose the thing down - use all my battery - and nothing.

What am I missing?

You are most likely missing a nanometer of uncut material.
I had no issues with the cutter in alpha but the tutorial part was tricky. I had to fiddle all around the green bits.

I think there should be some energy cells nearby though. So you can replenish and try again?
Although be warned that the tutorial mission is buggy and you might not be able to finish it anyway. Like me.

I had no trouble finishing the tutorial. Sure there were some hiccups, but i finished it eventually

For the cutting tool, you have to complete the straight line over the entire magloc ... sometimes you might be missing a pixel if the movement is not straight and stable enough
So you'll have to redo.
Same for rectangular panels, you need to follow the cut line quite accurately, else the panel will not fall down

THe worse issue was the fact that default bind for Tool mode change [R] was not working at all. I had to change it to [R]-hold - and only after that i could use the overcharge action that is needed to be able to finish the tutorial.

Your cutter may go green over a wider area than the real hotspot. I didn't have any trouble with panels yesterday but I was 0/2 at cutting maglocks on lockers. Not sure what's changed there since Alpha.
Yeah, a lot wouldn't work for me - then later they did. Game is very b0rked rn.

Try the other side of the maglock.

Like that :

This. The side you approach that particular lock from when crouching under the srv actually prevents you from cutting the right part, crawl in further and face the other way. I had no problems with it when I did it, but I've seen a streamer not have any luck until facing the other direction, exposing the correct surface.

Nothing. The tutorial mission is buggy AF.

It took me an entire 1/1 energy cell battery to carefully cut a SINGLE line along that lock area

Fun started when the Energylink tool decided NOT to fire on overload mode.

FDev, WTH did you make suffocating without O2 in your suit such an infinitely long and tortuous process?

Rage quit tutorial after 5th attempt and returned to playing X4 for the satiating and stress free XP

This sounds awful like a you problem to me.

Now that makes me feel better for quitting out of the tutorial when that happened to me. Feared I had developed a dodgy controller or something...
smart move. The tutorial is definitely bugged. And is clearly a touch and go experience for ppl posting in this thread. Watched OA's recent video playthrough of the new tutorial and he did everything I did at the maglock part. Went without a hitch for him (or perhaps he cut out whatever inconvenient issues he may have encountered opening the lock)

Regardless, I'm moving on to the next game in my rotation (RDR2). When I finally return to the ED 'verse, I'm skipping the tuorial and jumping straight into the game. It's ironic I never experienced anything like that in the alpha though

Luck of the draw I guess

Holy Crap. O really??

And here I was thinking myself smart after figuring it would be easier to cut it from the crouch position---except facing the wrong way i.e the same way in which you approach the SRV.

Regardless, I DID get the panel to come off --- after wasting the only power cell I had on my suit. But as for the Energylink. Apparently making the logical mistake to follow the directions to overcharge the tool ---then aiming the tool at the blue target cursor aka directly over the charge port to open the door. That really seemed to the tool off. At which point my dear Energylink decided to elope with that ne'er-do-well space daemon troll styling itself as Murphy's Law. And I decided to call it a day.

If this is a reproducible glitch/bug, I really hope FDev address this on ALL the SRVs/other surfaces with the next patch. Gameplay will be unbearable if not. It's insane how the angle of attack can determine the mission success outside the tutorial. Or whatever is blocking the Enerylink from performing its overload functionality.

It would really, really, REALLY me off if I was in a huge system like the 3 sun one in the alpha. Where travel times are on par with Hutton Orbital travel times (made even worse if traveling by taxi). You finally make it to your drop off point and figure out where to infiltrate the unpowered base. Only to find you're incapable of cutting a simple panel off a wall/piece of equpment. Or unable to enter an unpowered facility because your PC offended their Energylink's digital olefactory senses in some way....

nvm enduring all that while hostile NPCs are being dropped into your location and suddenly timing is off the essence

Edit: so the adjective f.e.c.k.l.e.s.s is now a new, anti PC cuss word FDev?? Really? I must protest that as an overly entitled Yankee, that I never received the memo regarding this latest censorship on the forums

Just in case admin thinks I'm stirring up unnecessary shade

Some just appear broken. I've recorded a ton of them and definitely will be presenting these in a video at some point. In alpha, I had no issues with cutting a single maglock (and I cut hundreds I think).

By the way, for most other stuff, this all works fine now. The panel doesn't fall into the housing any more and that's at least one thing that's better. But the cutting definitely feels less... cathartic these days. I'm sure it felt better in alpha. I often just end up spinning about quickly because doing it slowly doesn't really yield any better results.

Yeah I did just that. Cut VERY CAREFULLY in a slow, straight line from one side to the next. It worked. Only after I burned through the 1/1 power cells on my suiit

Unlike the EnergyLink. Pointing that thing directly at the blue icon/reticule where you overload the lock (first insuring overload mode toggled on) did. not. work.

At. All.

Or ANYWHERE withing the immediate vicinity of the alleged "sweet spot". I've overloaded many access panels in the alpha. So really doubt FDev would radically change the process and location of where to aim the EnergyLink tool.....

The fact it worked for you and not for me (and seems touch and go for others) implies this tutorial game mechanic on the glitchy side.

Hence the end of my patience and subsequent #Rage_!Quit!

Can't valdiate this for the game until I return to playing. Will be skipping the tutorial with hope this was just a glitch on my end.

But to be fair to FDev, this tutorial (and way they immediately introduced it by forcing you into the spaceleg experience via a flashback? the moment you enter the game) was really well designed. It's features just need a little polish and it will be perfect.
