Confusing backstory

I was just in a system patronized by Senator Petraus. According to the recent announcement in GalNet, he has reduced the already low tax rate down to zero and is an all round good guy. Unfortunately it's too late because the current mission in the system is to bring in food to the starving masses who are dying in the streets. I'm assuming whoever puts the various aspects of this together - the cartographics, the missions, and the news - aren't checking in with each other's lore and storylines. Not very immersive?

Just because he lowered the taxes doesn't mean that there's no starvation in the system. He could have been a really harsh dictator until now and the move with lowering the taxes could be only a marketing play to put himself in a good light in preparation to take over the throne. And what made you think he's a good guy? Genuine question. I'm under the impression that he's quite harsh, haughty and very military orientated Senator.

Man, you're just bashing the game for the sake of it.

If you want to argue, though, I can argue. A politician that lowers taxes to zero is not a good politician. Taxes are supposed to be a way for the citizens to fund a government that has the duty of serving their interests. Of course if you think removing taxes altogether is a good move, you probably think countries should be run by private corporations.

In any case, it is well known that Patreus is trying to gain the favor of the people simply by throwing money at the problem. He is funding the government with his fortune while he ensures the support of the people by removing taxes. This effectively disables the people because they are not empowering the government any more, Patreus is. Once he gets what he wants he can walk away and the government he leaves behind will no longer be able to support itself (and god save whoever comes after him an tries to collect any taxes).

Patreus loans money to foreign countries and then sells them weapons for that money. A real good guy, yeah.

By the way, do you know where part of the immense debt of Greece came from? European banks loaned Greece huge amounts of money so that they could buy weapons from other European countries. Really good move on both sides, right?

I suggest you read more in-game lore from the excellent links rootsrat posted before bashing the game unfairly.

I am critical of this game (look at my post history if you don't believe me), but senseless criticism just demeans valid critique.

Hey mate. Have a look on Elite Dangerous official website.

There is also the Wiki.

And for a full Elite timeline see here (although read the notes, as this timeline is a mix of official and unofficial info). And here's the official Gazetteer included with Frontier: Elite II game.

If you want even more lore information, there is always Elite Expanded Universe website made Selezen.

Happy reading! :D
Cheers. :)

Man i wish we saw some of those big ships (https://www.elitedangerous.com/galaxy/gs-federation/) sometimes was sitting outside stations and the comms going back and forth between station and ship. Just for some liveliness and not because of an event. Just to see a massive ship being there still outside would be epic. :)

Some good points there, spoiled by some replies making it a personal issue. Seems like some people are on a hair trigger, because all I did was make an assumption and promote comment on immersivity. There's absolutely no "game bashing" intended or, what was it, "senseless criticism" in the observation that one bit of information didn't appear to relate to another. So I wondered if the various aspects of lore and current events were coming from different, unconnected sources. This is senseless critical game bashing?

I'm sorry I asked. Honestly, I'm truly sorry I even made the posting, which was done because I was confused about why people were starving in this system at this time.

Of course I can construct some story to explain it. It's a game set in an entirely imaginary universe so I can construct any story about anything and nobody can prove me wrong. I'm just not so immersed in the lore that I don't see the possibility that something that looks superficially like an error is actually an error and I raised that possibility, which clearly I should not have done.

The links on lore and the back story of the game are welcomed and appreciated, thanks to the poster for those. When I started in the game I spent ages looking for all this stuff, and it's great to have that information and those links out there and up front. But the people who made this thread into a personal argument, sorry, but you should understand that I didn't read your postings once I got the part where you insulted me.

Don't worry about it too much. It's internet. This things happen.

As for the game: Elite has a great lore material (30 years and counting! ;) ). Happy reading and remember that there are also the books.
