Awesome, (I mean it!) we can land on planets, search the galaxy for ever more beautiful ones, explore the wonderful surface features, find out about materials and crafting, investigate surface outposts and Points of Interest and generally do what we've been doing in season 1 within the new setting and the new possibilities of Horizons. I think that's a terrific start, and I'm very impressed and enthusiastic about it.
In true Elite Dangerous community tradition though, here are a couple of things I'd like to see added,
The new trailer, the gameplay trailer and several of the "leaked" previews showed spectacular combined arms combat on the planet surfaces. Ships fighting in canyons, ships supporting attacking SRVs.....
Not so much pew pew, more "BLAM, BLAM, KABAAAAM!!!" Very cool stuff indeed. But from what I understand, we won't encounter hostile ships on the planet surface, in fact Michael Brookes said in the stream yesterday that planetary dogfighting with AI ships wasn't going to happen "any time soon." I humbly suggest, given how cool this clearly is, that AI planetary dogfighting, and general AI population levels on planets might be re-examined.
Secondly, for me, the ability to get on to the surface of planets calls out to my inner Explorer. I would love to see the first person to land on a planet get a credit, in the same way the discoverer does. I felt sure this was the plan originally, and similarly I'm a bit confused why all the data amassed on the surface in your SRV can not be sold to Galactic Cartography in the same way as your scans from space are. It seems only logical to me.
Those are my thoughts, as I say, in general I'm very positive Horizons and looking forward to getting stuck into it.
