Correct. If set right (Relative Mouse Movement) you have no disadvantage over a flight stick.
I have both and in some situations kb+m is even better.
I must admit that I found it harder using a mouse and keyboard, mainly docking is what I found harder. But an expensive joy/flight stick isn't needed, I use a Logitech Extreme Pro stick but before that I was using a £15.99 stick from PC World with no problems. Why wait, buy Elite now and then save while you play. If you are like me buying Elite will save you money, I've bought no other games and hardly go out now! I've saved a fortune on beer!
I considered buying Elite for about 5 minutes before I hit the purchase button. I've never played any other space sim but the videos and screenshots were more than enough. No regrets. I play with KB+M, haven't had any issues yet though I admit I am not an avid fighter pilot. I have the odd RES farming expedition here and there but I have net to calibrate my mouse for sensitivity and whatnot. Therefor I haven't deemed a HOTAS necessary. One day, maybe. Probably around the same time I invest in a DK2.

I bought X55 few days after buying ED. Still I play with KB+M 70% of the time (when trading, hunting WSSs/SSSs/USSs and just flying around from system to system), because I can read forums at the same time (ED and browser are not in full screen mode then) and it really helps to fight the boredom during repetitive and long trips.
I use a 360 controller with VoiceAttack. Haven't looked back.
I have bought the game & did 2 tutorials with kb&m & did pretty good. Hafta work in am grrr so can't test it past target practice & basic combat. Killed the Solar Fluke in about 2-3 minutes was fun & good for teaching me some basics. I steer very well with kb&m but SO much to learn. I will read the post the 1st reply linked to...TYVM it looks informative, but can't stay with it anymore gotta get ready for work cya soon. TY for the many replies like the enthusiasm.
You can always pick up a 2nd-hand TM HOTAS. That's what I did, paid EUR 25 incl shipping and it's working wonderfully.
