constitutes a pirate?

just curious if anyones found a good way to see what constitutes a pirate? Got a mission to go to three systems and kill 5 pirates. Go to the first system, find and kill 7 wanted ships, 5 of which are combat classes (eagles, sidewinders, cobras, even an anaconda(or python, cant remember)) 2 of which are hauler class. Check mission status, 2 pirates killed... hmmm okay. So off to the next system, get interdicted by a wanted eagle, who starts to attack me. perfect, this must be a pirate. After killing him still only shows 2 pirates killed?

Just wondering if theres a better way to indicate if they are a pirate? am I missing something displayed on the kill warrant scanner? (all ships are wanted in the system before I kws)

not a big deal, as I'm a bounty hunter so I spend my day killing wanted, just wondering if I've missed a game mechanic, I know some of them are subtle.

I was wondering this too, but apparently pirates will have an IFF of FOE (Red/Hostile). So they will pop up on your radar as red. The music also changes whenever a pirate changes, I've noticed.

I think the mission is scripted so that you have to stop by USS to make it work. I tried nav beacons and interdictions, but they didn't work for me. Also, i noticed that not every ship counts. But wanted sidewinders, cobras and vipers do count most of the time. Anyway, done plenty of those - just cruise around supercruise drop into USS and kill everything with a wanted status. :)

Check USSs in the target system. When you appear with a bunch of ships, you get scanned and one of the says on the comms, "I wonder what you are carrying?" (or something like that) = Pirates.
