Consumer Rift

I half expected pre orders to start today, but thought the Rift looked every bit the consumer product we'd been hoping for. I guess we will see next week when it actually gets tested but these are definately exciting times. I'd love for Devs to tell us they are switching their Dk2 demos to CV1 ! ;)

I was watching a live blog of the a announcement but didn't see the specs. Did they get announced or are we still waiting for the nitty gritty details?

I'll admit, I'm pretty darn excited!

Notice the Eve Valkyrie footage?
I'm very pleased that the Space game genre is becoming popular again.

I watched the live show. At first I was kinda disappointed when they showed... tatataa.. here's our controller and it's an Xbox controller, whoopidoo. But Palmer came in at the end with a 'one more thing' and showed these:

I wonder if those could be placed on an extension, like a joystick and a throttle but without the electronics. Those could be relatively cheap.

Anyway, with CV1, controller and the system specs known, development for non-devkits can now be done. :)

The oculus booth at e3 just became the hottest ticket in town!

who cares about an xbox controller

are they stupid?

Not so stupid if they are after an immediate and familiar solution to cater for as wide a range of gaming experiences as possible. Not the most elegant solution granted but a sensible commercial decision whilst they continue to get the eye and hand tracking perfected.

A lot of people are poopooing the Xbox controller. But devs want a standardized controller to develop for. This is especially important for a VR solution you can't see in game. Every player needs to have a unified input method across different games. Thar way I don't have to relearn how to center my view, or walk forward and strafe left for different games.

Interesting to also note that Valve started shipping there GK VR system this month.

Should be an interesting battle in it's self.

Totally understand why choosing for a standard. I just wish those darn xbox controllers would fit my hands. For me it feels like a kids toy, too small and I get cramps.

Maybe there is some kind of add-on to make it larger? Couldn't find any...

They do not need to sell it as a package deal at all. The CV1 is a head mounted display. Its a bit like a new curved screen monitor coming out by Sony and they partner it with a webcam that can only be used with that monitor. Slightly bad example but thats how i see it. Its a peripheral PC device which should be compatible with lots of other peripheral devices.

There are (or should be) a variety of input solutions for the CV1 depending on the type of game not just Xbox1 controller.

e.g. (keyb/mouse joystick, oculus touch)

Question is will you be able to use other generic controllers with the CV1?

Since many VR games and demos (including Elite) work with an XBox Controller out the box - no, not stupid at all.

the only people it really affects are those who already have an xbox pad, or those who only want to play games which do not need them, and so it is just dead expense.

imo these days I do not think it is unreasonable to expect a pc gamer to have access to a main stream control pad.... that being said, bundling it does mean stuff like the haptic triggers will get more support as everyone will have one.

its a tough one. I do not mind as i have been considering picking a new pad up, but sympathise with those who do not need one and would rather save money.

Same. It almost sounded like they had developed something brand new...drum roll...it's an Xbox controller....oh ! I don't think I would have clapped when I heard that.

He did say wide field of view which is one of the things I'm very interested in. I'd love to know what field of view compared to the current DK2. For me the DK2 is good but it really does feel like you are looking through a pair of goggles and there is not really much peripheral !

You do realize that they have the same button scheme as the xbox controller. Good for them to split the controller in 2, and adding motion sensor (position) capabilities. Innovative, but not groundbreaking as it evolves rather than create a new scheme.

The thing that got me about the live show was the way the presenter was stressing that they were improving on an existing model that has been used by many people; a light and balanced design, a comfortable cloth finish, easy-to-adjust IPD, suitable for spectacles, easy to don. It may be possible that Oculus will come up with the better headset, even if it has a lower technical spec.

Poke through the wood in the belly of that horse. See if there are any soldiers in there.

Here's another question..

The XB One controller needs a USB dongle to work with a PC. Doesn't this dongle require Windows 10? The system requirements of the the Rift is Windows 7 with SP1, so that means it must work with other controllers.

But doesn't the fact that most folks will take the free update to Win 10 to use the gamepad mean that developers will assume that this is the standard operating system?

I don't want to sound like the self-righteous brothers. That's quite a conspiracy theory I've woven there. And even if it's true and I'm feeling a little miffed that I'm being lead down a path, well!. DX12 might be a better VR experience anyway.
