Maybe a letter for Front, Back, Left, Right, Up, Down. Or North etc.
Someone should probably post this in the alpha forum, bad tactical UI really sounds somewhat rebirthy in a bad way.

Or the radar could show an arrow/blip or something in the direction of where the attack is coming from..

I know this can be seen on the ship model to the right, but its just not apparent enough where you are getting attacked from when in an engagement me thinks.
