If I select the contacts tab on the left hand cockpit console I can view the wanted status and bounty of ships local to me.
How does this differ from a KWS?
Does the contacts tab only show bounties for the current system?

If I understand your question correctly...

When you use a KWS then said tab will show ALL the bounties on a given target (there might be more than one bounty). If you DON'T use a KWS, then said tab will only show the local bounty which you get by simply keeping a target in your scope for a while.
