Content of Alpha

I'm expecting beta to be delayed, really. Or for it to be much more alpha - quality than usual. To be a true beta then it would need to be a fully integrated set of all game systems, each of which need to go through alpha first. Sounds unlikely in a month, especially considering the Xmas break.

Remember those alpha builds are produced to nail down core concepts of the game, not to do overall testing. So we actually don't know any internal schedule FD have for this. It easily could be that beta is already built slowly in background of all this, and when all configuration and feedback is nailed down, it will be fed into that.

Yes I shall tend to think as you. Maybe a gap of 1 or 2 months on the initial schedule for the starting up of bétas? At any rate, I really want that Frontier takes all its time to offer a fantastic game. The forums and the images to come from the Alpha, are already enough for my immediate happiness

My take on it is that what most people think of as "beta" is really the "Gamma" here, where the game is being polished.

Alpha will test core single concepts, Beta will join those together but in rough and disjointed format - of perhaps a small area (couple of systems at most). By the time those two are done, then the rest of the pledgers will be given access (Gamma) and the game polished over the rest of the year.

As such, I can see how, barring critical glitches, Alpha will take place over a month or 2 with perhaps a couple of days a week of core concept testings followed with greater implementation and merge of these concepts in late Jan early Feb.

I could be way off, but gut feeling ET all....:p

I suspect you're correct, except maybe the use of the 'offline' word. Surely Frontier will tie our alpha access to account, and we'll have to sign in to access it. Also, online allows for much better data collection.

Agreed - 'offline' demo's of various scenarios

Mazhurg - DB actually quoted on one of his dev diaries that a 'gamma' like stage would follow the beta testing where slowly components of the full game would be released.

I'll be a bit upset if there are time restrictions on when we can run the alpha, like only a particular couple of days a week as you suggest. Many of us who've pledged high in order to take part would likely have limited times we can play so could find ourselves locked out of the process entirely.

No, I'm expecting it to basically be 24/7 access to the alpha once released, barring patch time or server maintenance.

I agree with most what you said, except it was announced there won't be time limits on alpha or beta.

I'm expecting something very limited.
A single ship, in a single sky box containing a planet and asteroids.
A basic menu with a selection of combat scenarios each within the same skybox.

What I am hoping for is a full cockpit with OR support enabled.

Pretty sure this has been talked about by Michael, alpha will be a series of single player encounters, with differing scenarios. The first was cited as a tutorial on how to fly in ED.

Don't forget there are going to be updates too.. It was my understanding that at some point we'll see some multiplayer - after we've all learnt to pilot :D

I think Frontier wants our feedback on how the ships handle etc.. all we need now is a date so we can book time off. Well at least for those lucky enough to have jobs that is :p
