Hi All,

I never really use joysticks (in fact hardly ever) I did purchase a while back a X52 Flight Controller Joystick, which I have hardly used is this any good as joysticks go?

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

I think it's largely personal preference. I am left handed so that affects the joystick I can comfortably use. I cannot use joypads at all and don't see any reason to learn.

They seem to testing it primarily with XBox controllers just now... if you don't want to spend a lot, then they're a sure fire bet to be decently supported with all the primary flight/combat functions catered for.

I completed Freespace and Freespace 2 with my old Sidewinder. That was charity shopped when I moved house as my PC no longer had a midi port to plug it into. One of the most robust pieces of kit I have ever owned.

I actually prefer Freespace 1 to Freespace 2. I liked the story progression and though the missions were more varied. It all plays beautifully and has been modded into the 21st century. Lovely games.

Never owned a joystick. I intend to try out mouse + keyboard and then xbox 360 controller during Beta and see how that goes. If after that I'm not happy with the controls I'll have a look at joysticks.

Postponing the purchase of of the gamepad might be a good idea. Those new XBOne gamepads are supposed to be rather good.

I have a joystick (currently used mainly for Oolite) and a Logitech Rumble Pad (PS3 style) controller.

I use the Logitech pad when I travel. I much prefer PS3 style controllers over XBox style, but they both require 2 hands on.
Using a joystick I have one hand free for use on the keyboard, so joystick will most likely be my preferred controller for E: D.

How cheap is cheap? A brand new one is only 20 quid.

Haven't bought one for some years, but 20 quid sounds good for brand new. I thought they were twice that or more.

It depends on how complex the controls will be for E: D. If keyboard is required to control functions beyond that catered for by a joypad, then maybe joystick&keyboard will be the way to go. However if the button combinations on a joypad is enough then I would prefer joypad.

I've not used a stick for a long time, probably since the 1990s. Ever since then joypads have been the norm for me, starting with the Atari Jagpads, then the PS1 and PS2 pads.

I play Oolite keyboard only, but only because I'm an old BBC original Elite keyboard player.

I fully intend to pick up the Saitek x52 soon. Not just for Elite, X:Rebirth and SC are also on my wish list. Helps me justify the cost :)

As mentioned previously, Freepsace with a joystick was a blast and its been many years since I've had one in my arsenal. I miss that feeling of immersion you just cant get from keyboard/mouse.
