Controller set up

Hi, I'm playing elite on a Mac pc, using a playstation 5 controller, overall it's working pretty well, but I do have something that I'd like to change but I can't see from the options how I might be able to configure this, so I thought I'd try asking in here.

The goal is this: When flying low over a planet in my asp, I like to look down at the windows by my feet to see if I fly over anything interesting that might be organic. The default setup of the controller has this on the right joystick/thumbstick button press to turn on head looking, this also turns the mouse look on and off, which is fine. But the right joystick is also used for yaw and thrust left and right, which I'd really like to be able to use whilst still looking down.

The issue is that when I switch this joystick to thrust and yaw control, my head returns to its centre position. I'd really appreciate any thoughts on how I could set this up so as to be able to use the the thrusters and yaw from the joystick, whilst still looking down, or controlling my head movement with the mouse?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

Oh man, I would love to try that, I'm running via wine on a Mac though, and am not about to get the Apple Vision Pro any time soon, oh it must be so immersive in VR!

Seems I'll have to investigate remapping the entire controller. There is some functionality that is not being used, I've an unmapped button, likely this is a wine issue though, but if I can nail that, I could perhaps set up an entire new 'headlook' mode with it.

I believe there is a setting for headlook that can be set to Toggle or Hold. Give that a try.
Otherwise it's because you are using a Mac PC, with a PlayStation 5 controller. 😋

lol, I should really change my name to commander McWilyRites! :D
I must say, I'm surprised just how well it does run though wine. All wine whining asides.
That does sound like a promising toggle option; thanks for the pointer, I'll have a look for that.

It's in ship controller settings and if I remember correctly it's kind of hidden. You have to first open up +Headlook and only then will it appear in the group above it or something like that. Weirdest menu thing I've ever seen.

Oh shoot, now I'm going to have to fire up elite to take a look, fatal for my good intentions of an afternoons solid coding!

... Thanks for that, got it, and also the place to stop the panels popping up when you look, which I'm not to fond of; Great, I'm all set to search for organic life in the far reaches of the galaxy!

Correction. I almost remembered correctly. It's not under +Headlook Mode, where you would expect it to be, 🙄 it's in the one above it.
+Mode Switches > Headlook > Button mode.

Now get back to work..

That almost worked, but the head still returns back up to centre when you let go, I've just found that unsetting the right thumb stick works if I don't mind looking with the mouse, it would be nice to be able to keep the thumb stick look and it not reset to centre unless I ask it to.

Or toggle between mouse and thumbtack.

Looks like setting headlock to mouse button one and removing it from the thumb stick could be the solution, having also just discovered how to turn flight assist off, that could be quite nice on the thumb stick press button instead, as it is redundant when the head look is removed.

Can't you just bind it to a button other than the thumbstick (or modifier+stick)? Just asking because I use Hotas+Kb/M so not familiar with controller behavior.

Yes, seems that putting it on the mouse is working, but I really do miss not having it on the thumb though, when this is the case. The headlock returning to centre is useful when docking, looking up as you come in, and then centre once lined up. I may get used to this on the mouse though, it is pretty versatile, and I've got a track ball, which I can keep close to the controller. Could be just a matter of time to get used to the change. I'm thinking about mapping the boost elsewhere too, as I keep pressing it when I'm wanting to make delicate manoeuvres, as it is in the default config. It's rather hairaising when you are inside a space station!

Here is my controller settings, which I never use but made anyway. I tried squeezing as much as I could in there but Kb/M is still needed.

That sounds like a great tip, something that I need to do, it has been disturbing my custom settings that has put me off really experimenting.
I need to find a way to extract my save game from wine too, to keep a backup, not really sure how that works with the server connection, or if it is even possible.

Our saves are stored on the servers, and for good reason.

As for bindings and options, they are in the %localappdata% folder under /frontier/elite/.
(i recommend just backing up the whole folder as it contains visited stars cache too)

I use a controller with headlook, and as long as no setting is made to "center when not in use", you can toggle headlook on/off and have control of yaw/pitch.
-it does feel a bit wonky in the beginning to have your view at an odd angle while maneuvering, but it works really well when surveying planets.
(the above requires a secondary bind for centering headlook, so that is something to keep in mind)

Hope this helps some.

cheers

Can't you get a Track ir setup, and forget about controllers for looking around? There are lots of questions regarding LinuX users on the web. including Opentrack..

Oh, I don't know how I missed that setting; Thanks, that solve the issue!
