Newcomer / Intro Controlling Your Ship

I spent a futile few hours today trying to learn how to fly my ship. Pretty much failed every Training scenario.

Im not a Fighter Pilot who joined NASA for gods sake. The tutorials suck at explaining what all the various flight controls do.

ToR or Freelancer is perfectly designed for Mouse & Keyboard use, this game simply....isn't. Im not an octopus.

Anyone have any tips on how to setup the keyboard controls in order to actually fly?

ED is controller agnostic, which means that all controllers offer about the same level of control. ED offers you two mouse modes: relative and absolute. Within the relative mouse mode your ship moves with the movement of your mouse and stops turns as soon as you stop the mouse. Within absolute mouse mode a mouse emulates the joystick, i.e. the further you move the mouse from the centre the faster you turn.

Freelancer has 0-order mouse control, which pretty much means that this is the only way to control your ship in that game as it offers significant advantages over any other control method. This is not going to happen in ED.

What you need to do is to test different mouse modes, test different mouse sensitivity options and find the way that is more comfortable to you. Also take into account that you should use pitch and roll in ED to manoeuver rather than pitch and yaw.

You don't, however, have to keep roll mapped to most left/right. A lot of people seem to other yaw on left/right with roll mapped to keys. Certainly that's how I mapped things before I moved to sick control.
There's some good videos on YouTube around adjusting the mouse settings.

As usual, I can only point to Crab's custom keyboard setup.
It made my newbie days a lot easier.

Today I use Crab's HOTAS setup and everything is placed neatly and accessible.

Link in sig :)
