I have scanned through other threads and havent found an answer yet so here we go...
I've bought the pre-Order and am planning for when it comes out.

It seems like a HOTAS is worth investing in as it looks like a keyboard and mouse isnt going to cut it. I played the Xwing/Tie fighter games a good while back but they were the last space sim type games I play, having never played the original of Elite.

So when choosing a HOTAS I read something about pedals? do you need them? with the stick and thruster chap?

Looking at the X52 pro or the X55?

Anyone got any advice?

I have the X52, not pro... and have mapped pretty much everything I need to control the ship and functionality.
Its the only stick I have used in a long long time, I am extremely pleased with it. Should have got the Pro though, I believe its better quality.

Whilst this thread is about VR & controllers, there are some nice mappings being shown (imo).. since I use an oculus dk2 sometimes, I rely on the stick for everything, excluding comms: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=57921

Cheers man, this Oculus thing I checked that out too. I see that you strap that to your head, as I wear glasses can you fiddle with th "lens" on each side ?

It's still a development version and it has switchable lenses for those who normally need glasses, you can't use normal classes with it.

As my right leg and, indeed my whole right side doesn't work and I only use a gaming mouse one can easily say neither HOTAS or pedals are needed.

It can make the game play more realistic.

Working to a budget - I've plumped for the reasonably priced Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X which I've found to be pretty good so far.

I'm new to PC gaming so am finding the process of working out the best controller mappings quite a task! I keep thinking that the last time I played Elite it was using a Competition Pro 5000 joystick and a squishy Speccy keyboard.

You can yes, but I don't wear glasses myself so I can't really comment on how they are with glasses on.

I will say this... whilst its absolutely fantastic, its worth holding out for the consumer version with a better display.. its great to see where it's at as it stands but its more of a showcase thing, something you will perhaps use a few times, fall in love with and desperately want a consumer version.

Mine sits gathering dust 80% of the time, others mileage may vary. Especially since the text is a bit of a pain to read in ED and the galaxy map is difficult to navigate.

That game without Oculus would not be the same. I can't imagine having to switch views left and right with a controller. Maybe with 3 monitors, that is a better option, but nothing beats the rift.

In terms of wearing glasses, the Oculus Rift DK2 comes with 2 sets of lenses, one of them to use when wearing glasses. A few friends of mine tried it and it didn't bother them at all... that is of course if you don't wear these:
