So I've recently been reconfiguring my Corvette, and running into the headache of what to do with the medium hardpoints. Their convergence is utterly terrible, making fixed mountings ineffective at best.
I thought it would be nice if we had the option to alter the convergence of individual hardpoints by manipulating their angle of fire. The idea would be pretty straight forward, when accessing the modules panel, selecting a hardpoint would give us a bar with its convergence in degrees. We could add or subtract degrees to angle the hardpoints inward, or outward, to get different fixed mountings to converge at different distances. This function is already supported by the ship due to the functionality of gimballing, we'd simply have manual (but obviously less dynamic) control over it with fixed mountings. The drawback would be that rather than firing in a straight line (as fixed do now), over-angling the hardpoints would cause projectiles to merge, cross, and then diverge beyond a given distance, meaning you'd have to choose between staight firing hardpoints that are mediocre at any distance, or ones that converge at a given distance and are pretty much useless beyond it.
This would open up several ships that suffer from terrible hardpoint placement and allow more variety in ship config. On the other hand, perhaps terrible hardpoint placement is a way balancing ships, and this would obviously ruin that. I just hate being forced to run gimbals on certain hardpoints because reasons. Thoughts?
