Convince me to join your side! Powerplay.

I've been waiting for the powerplay update for a quite a while. As an avid RPG connoisseur I can honestly say that I finally have a reason d'etre in the world of ED. However, I cannot bring myself to support for any of the current powers.. or at least not as far as what I'm aware of their merits and face value go...
Therefore I'd like to ask you, good people of ED forums, to show me what I've been neglecting to notice about the powers that I'd potentially back. Whoever persuades me to join their side will get a powerful and skilled (not to mention humble) ally in the quest of showing the galaxy the only true way to prosperity!

In any case, here are 4 powers that I'd potentially back. Any comment that'd sway my opinion is welcome:
-Felicia Winters - I like what she stands for. Cracking down on corporate oligarchy and improving social situation is definitely something I could get behind. However, fighting against 2/3rds of the Congress, then fighting against those who actually control that congress and finally against the populous whose consciousness I'd rank somewhere between "Idiocracy" and "Brave New World".. She may be on top at the moment, but the cards are heavily stacked against her and her vision.

-Arissa Lavigny-Duval - Out of all 4 Empire factions, she comes on top as far as preserving the honor and dignity of the Empire go. That being said, best of four bad options ain't much to go for. Unfortunately, pushing for status quo when there's something rotten in the state of Denmark makes me doubt she would be a capable Empress. In fact, even tho I'd never personally back them, I'd consider both Tores and Parteus as better candidates for leadership simply because they realize a change is necessary for Empire to survive, let alone prosper.

-Edmund Mahon - If Alliance wants to become anything like its RL counterpart of the Unaligned Movement during the Cold War they need to kick it up several gears.. Smallest, most disjointed, without any vision they need a capable, charismatic and determined leader who would show the members they need to pull together and show the other two entities that they are not to be taken lightly. Unfortunately this bloke has none of the necessary qualities, and while diplomatic and economical expansion is nice, consolidation is at least as, if not more important.

-Aisling Duval - A mouthpiece for God knows who (I'm pretty sure I don't wanna know, my bet is on some Federal scumbag), spouting populist nonsense and using her looks and pipe dreams to attract the most gullible and uninformed. Unfortunately, I fear this gal will get the most support from the Commanders, mostly because RP-ers, min-maxers and those who actually pay attention to what's going on are all in vast minority compared to your average easily-dazzled Joe (what irony it'd be if she was really sponsored by Federation). Last on the list of people I'd join and unless something drastically changes my sole motivation would probably be the good old "If you can't beat them, join them".

So, good people of ED forums, will you help this soul torn asunder by the eternal conflict of morality and practicality? Enlighten me: Who is the savior of the galaxy?

I'm in the same boat as you. I don't really like any of them much. At the moment I'm just out on the fringes of the Galaxy, so none of this is too important right now. When I get back though, I'd like to join in the fun, but I'm really not sure who I'd like to side with. :/

If you are looking at Empire, the young princess Aisling Duval, IS the rightful heir to the throne. the others are just 'pretenders' to that position.

Arry.

I don't know about all that "savior" stuff, but I'm undermining the hell out of a bunch of systems under Felicia Winters for Zemina Torval. I like how Zemina is all about the greed and shady covert ops :D

Pledge to Senator Patreus.

I was dubious first too. Actually, it was the last thing I predicted - me, a Federal commander, pledging to the Senator. I could hardly think of a more unlikely scenario. But I changed my mind. And here's why.

The man's obviously a consummate politician. He is so damn practised at those smooth recoveries, at saying the right thing at the right time in public, and making the right political moves - he's got a lot of experience in the job behind him, so that no doubt contributes. And yet at the same time, I got the feeling - like many do - that there's way more going on behind those practised moves. In public he's slippery - in private I have no doubt he's blunt as hell and knows EXACTLY what he's doing. He obviously has a very long-term plan, judging by how he's positioned himself, how he's built up his wealth and power base. I get the distinct impression that this man has a strategic mind and near everything he does, every public appearance, every quote, is a move in a long-term plan. He knows what to say to people, when to say it, and yes, how to manipulate, he knows what's in the hearts and minds of people. Make no mistake, this is a very dangerous man... and an intelligent one. Now, in my assessment, someone like that has a very serious shot at winning out over their rivals and pulling it all off. Someone that smart and strategic is also likely to be able to keep on top of things as Emperor, I figure, and be a competent ruler. In addition I take into consideration the following; it's quite clear that Patreus is motivated and ambitious, the kind of man who desires to shape his own future and make it a reality in the present - that's something I can get on board with and aim for myself - yet at the same time I've observed no signs of sociopathy, irrationality, psychosis, so it is my assessment that he would not be the tyrant that some suspect he would be.

It's a risk, yes, but, there are reasons to recommend the Senator.

Absolutely! +1 and also Plus ... we have cookies! ;)

Why join any for the sole reason of helping them enslave yet another planet under some broken ideal related to a social contract? All the powers are corrupt!

Use their powers to usurp their goals! Join any power...and undermine all others! If you start having a beef with the one you are in, take the consequences and defect to another one...a die roll is helpful so you maintain your objectivity!

How would this work? Any one working for any power can work against any other powers advances towards expansion. A group so dedicated could start causing turmoil and undoing the work of thousands of players, mindlessly fighting the fight for broken promises and toys.

Of course there are groups with more pointed goals, doing the same against particular powers. Maintain your freedom, watch for the signs that these players are amassing and join the fight against the Powers...rather than falling victim to the mentality of 'against because I want to be included'...embrace the idea 'against for my personal identity and freedoms'.

Patreus has cookies!!! you should add him to your list! ;)

In war only the Lord of War prospers, and this guy is the definition of the word... Seriously, look up Encyclopedia Universalis 3290. edition and onwards, there's his picture next to the expression.
Tho I must say, cookies did tempt me for a second there!

True, she is first in line of the throne. Fortunately tho, throughout human history legitimacy was not always the most valid criteria for royal succession. And let's not forget that Emperor is alive and might still have something to say about the succession line. ;)

Whereas I do not. Going down to basics, the only real difference between her and Patreus is that he straight up kills for profit while she exploits people to death. Semantics really :D

Pledge to Senator Patreus.
etc.
Aisling knows exactly what to say as well, but I doubt you'd consider that as a perk in her case ;)
Anyway, I almost agree with your assessment. He'd be a very competent ruler.. if not for his probably boundless ambition, need to control and complete ruthlessness (after all, you don't have to be a sociopath in order to rationalize that your ends justify any means). A good emperor should be loved and respected as much as feared and envied, otherwise he is indeed just a tyrant, and neither Empire nor Galaxy needs another one of those.

Or you could join and help us to become the next power. We have cookies too:D

I've been following the exploits of Dukes for quite some time, and have commended your efforts on occasion. I tip my hat.. nay, bow to your persistence and will. Alas, I'm not the kind of a man who'd survive the frustrations of dealing with countless bugs, glitches and unfinished features without breaking several computer peripherals, so I'll have to decline your offer and wish you best of luck in establishing yourselves as a power.

As much as I wanted, I have never managed to get in the mindset necessary for a role of a truly Chaotic Neutral character.
Joking aside, as with Merc, I appreciate the hard work of Lughians as well and wish you as well best of luck in your own plays for power. :)

Aisling Duval has the same, only two letters different !
More seriously, she looks like where the money is. And I'm all about money. I fully intend to pledge to her and restart my trade venture....once I'm back from gods-know-where, think I have a good 7000ish Light years to travel.

Considering Winters wont persue the terrorists that murdered hundred of federal personale, including the president, id be keen to call you a traitor just by thinking of supporting her...

It is just a case of doing what is right.

Not to play devil's advocate, but who should she pursue? If going by the motive alone it's quite clear who had the most to profit from the demise of the old president.. but motive alone is not enough to prosecute anyone.
It is however enough to question loyalties in which case wouldn't supporting Hudson be the act of treachery? Something to think about.

It is just a case of doing what is right.
I believe there are at least 9 powerful people who'd disagree with your definition of "right". ;)

And that keeps you from selecting her? I think you have already made your mind. Now don't avoid the challange and go fight for what you like.

Winters is a hack! Hudson at least stands for something worth while, and is not full of empty promises and rhetoric.
