Convoy Event

So one of you introduced me to this old movie, Convoy. I've not seen the movie, but I have watched some clips and listened to the song a few too many times. Since the convoy of trucks in the movie were led by one Rubber Duck (often just called "Duck"), I thought it would be fun to someday replicate this in ED.

What I'm proposing is down the road (pun haha), for those of us who eventually own "truck-like" ships (Type-6, Type-9, etc), we get together and do a big ol' "convoy" cargo run of some appreciable distance. Perhaps even to Colonia!

Like the movie, I'm sure we'll get some griefers playing "Dirty Lyle", but I don't mind, it will make the event more like the movie. Just make sure to have a rebuy on your "truck". We meet some interesting tourist ships along the way, so if you have a Beluga full of Jesus-loving hippies, you're welcome to join us as well :D

I doubt I'll be ready to do something like this until the Fall, but I wanted to put the idea out there now to see if there would be any interest. Hauling cargo is not my first choice of careers, but I'll make an exception for an event like this. Let me know if this tickles your fancy!

In the meantime, enjoy the song I modified:

Was the dark of the moon on the 27th of June
In a Sidewinder pullin' gold
Ship-over Bill with a reefer on
And Carbine haulin' a manifold
We is headin' for bearing oh-one-oh
'Bout a light minute outta Moffitt Town
I says, "Willowfan, this here's the Old Duck.
"And I'm about to put the hammer down."

'Cause we got a little ol' convoy
Rockin' through the night.
Yeah, we got a little ol' convoy,
Ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on and join our convoy
Ain't nothin' gonna get in our way.
We gonna roll this space convoy
'Cross the Milky Way.

CONVOY!

For some, the lyrics in "The Bandit" are more fittings. You know, "East bound and down, forward speed and trucking, gonna see what's out there, gonna see what can be found.

If you're going to organise a convoy, you have to head out to the big trucker's destination; Hutton Orbital! :) (I'm actually on a run there right now, only 10 minutes left until I can pick up some mugs and gin for the rares CG<g>)

Yeah I'd definitely be interested in this because I am going with one of the type ships myself, seeing how my main job will be running trade that kind of stuff

Cool idea, get a couple of dozen winder all geared for a road trip, agenda, find Harry Potter and gries his as$ (behind). Now that would make a good video.

He could have but probably not. He has 100s of hours on the PC. He is flying around in top tier ships ganking too his little hearts content. I don't see him switching over. Not to say some of the pc griefers might switch systems.
But let's not worry about that possibility. Let's have some fun and make a whole new set of griefers. :)

Who gonna haul the logs, who's gonna haul the hogs, oops sorry SpaceBaboy, scratch that.

Don't scratch the pig.

Thank you.

Potter has to wait for Christmas to get PS4. His mum won't give him more money as he's wasted it on FdL skins and bushido games. Shame.

That's where the Steel Wolves come in! A convoy needs its escorts ;)
The MSR security wing would be happy to escorts you but you will be in long jump freighters and any effective escort ship at that point will never keep up. So you have a choice. Long range jumps without escorts or short jumps with escorts. You are only as strong as your weakest link.

This is where route planning (not the Route Planner) comes in. You need someone to make a route than has jumps with no more than the max jump distance of 'whatever-is-decided' LYs, and then get that route to everyone taking part. Have wings led by a person who relays the jump countdown that comes from the convoy leader for the main group, and some escorts ahead and behind to scout for pirates / help stragglers.

Hutton Orbital Truckers have done a couple of convoys that I've taken part in, and they've been massive amounts of semi-chaotic fun. Huge amounts of kudos to those doing the organising, it's can't be a simple task

That's all thinking for a day yet come, and if we overthink it, we lose the spirit of the movie. Personally I like the idea of a bunch armed "trucks" mixed in - a few Keelbacks, Pythons, Anacondas, all loaded with fighters. But I'm not the leader, and they ain't following me, I'm just in front.

Actually, I'll probably be just the hood ornament, LOL. I've got way to much learn between now and then (Fall) to enter into meaningful planning at this time.
