Cool Runnings

I love the idea of being able to sneak up on enemy ships in Silent Running mode and then appearing out of the shadows (in Kilngon Warbird style) to attack your chosen prey...
...but I feel like this is hindered if not outright denied by the fact that you now have no shields for like, ever!

I was wondering if it would be possible to in the least minimise the shield recharge time, if not remove it altogether (for coming out of silent running) to allow the SR mechanic to be used for being stealthy rather than just for trying to sneak into stations.
I don't know of much other use for it.

Even trying to use it as a means of escape from other ships is detrimental since you are throwing your shields away by doing so - never a good plan.

All said, there may be a perfectly viable reason not to allow this - perhaps it breaks a mechanic I haven't thought about somewhere?
I'd be happy to hear counter thoughts on the idea, or others who might think it would add something new to the interaction between players and combat...

I thought that if you are outta shields, you're pretty much toast.
Do hull reinforcements give that much extra protection?

You could forget shields and use hull reinforcement. Cold-running, armored ships are great counters to SCB-laden builds.

Perhaps against a rookie pilot...maybe, but still probably fatal.

Problem is there isn't a build you can engineer to be cold enough and even if that was available you'd still be crippled with component damage on almost every shot you take.

But against a pilot who can only target with gimbals and sensors (rather than mkI eyeballs) it should work...somewhat, at over 500m (under 500m and you're going to blip on his sensors unless you are under 15% heat, which is impossible to build and shoot with :(

It also does not work against NPCs, as they seem not to need the sensrs to target, and stelth builds fail fast against them unfortunately.

It seems at the moment that any spec ship with armor only is at a disadvantage, even with SR. Biggest thing I can see is the lack of protection/coverage for your sub-systems. If you are able to stay in SR for long enough between heat build up then it should be able to be countered to a degree as the opponent should not be able to lock on and specifically target the module. TBH, I haven't tried SR for a long time, so i am not sure how effective it is in 1.3, but regardless I think a Shield build will always be stronger/safer option. Also heard as previous post that SR doesnt work against NPCs, so would only be a PvP option. Hopefully it can be improved at some point as it is an interesting tactical mechanic.

Diamondbacks with hull reinforcements and military composites do great at silent running in PVP. Just ask Lavignys Legion.

Edit: It's not Lavigny's Legion but this video will give you an idea.

Edit 2: Maybe a few Lavigny's Legion there....

Shields are only off in silent running. Cool Running can be done with spamming heat sinks and fully powered shields.

In both (cool and silent running) you have still a small chance of beeing detected, but for this setup a FDL with 6x heat sink, grade A Powerplant should stay cool for a long time without activating "silent running" (if you're not doing to much fancy manouvering).

the other setup would be without shields and massive hull-enhancement. this has the bonus, that you dont need any pips in sys and have much power to support weaponry.
