Cool stuff to see / do in VR

Greetings Commanders!

I have an Oculus Rift en-route (finally took the plunge), and I am wondering if you can recommend some cool locations to visit once I've got it all up and running?

Stuff that shows the epic scale of this game, big structures, planets in close orbit, huge stars, that kind of stuff :) Basically anything you would think to show off to someone if they came to test your VR setup with Elite!

Take your pick... As far as planets go, unfortunately not as epic since FD downgraded the planet surface geometry, am pretty sure mount neverest is still ingame (Epic mountain range) Sunset on Betelgeuse 2 is a must for anyone new to ED & VR. VY Canis Majoris. Ariel in Sol.

Since you are new to VR you'll probably be blown away just by standing next to an Imperial Eagle.

Everything is amazing in VR in Elite! The stations, the planetary rings , the sense of scale in general. But I'd probably say visiting a Thargoid base was the best VR experience I've had full stop.

Although there are loads of great views in ED in VR, ring systems around gas giants are my favourite. Drop out of supercruise near the inner edge of a ring system, after flying there as low as you dare (i.e. close enough to see the individual rocks) and then look up at the planet....its awesome.

No need to go anywhere or do anything. I generally find that just the act of getting someone sat in a spaceship and looking around blows their mind!

Simply stand up in your chair and take a walk around on your bridge. Get down on you hands/knees and look under some of the consoles around the chair. Look closely at some other displays on the bridge.... Simply explore your ship's bridge space...

I just spent a day in Azeban Orbital. Couldn't leave because of the BIG planet and really nice sunrises! Really awesome location to be in VR.

do external camera from your SRV, then stand up out of your chair (IRL) and stand on the surface of a moon!
Then get a friend to do orbital bombardment of your position!

Thanks for the tips commanders! Sounds like I am in for a treat no matter what I do :) Away for work this week, so won't be able to play before the weekend. Hopefully there will still be some safe spaces to fly when the Thargoids arrive! Think I will swap to a cheaper ship for the first few hours...

Start heading to the Barnards Loop Nebula. As you get close it gets huge. Yes, there are more colourful nebulae, but the scale of the Loop works well in VR.

Thanks all, got the rift today! Must say the experience was very underwhelming... probably because the left screen is dead ;) Seems the unit is DOA. Oculus Support are looking into it now, have done all the possible problem-solving I (and they) could think of so I'm pretty sure it is a hardware problem.

Sucks, but as I'm going away on business for a few days it should give Oculus time to send out a new unit. Good test of their customer service if nothing else :)

Not big deal, but I was blown away the first time I landed on a planet that had a VERY CLOSE satellite moon or sister planet. VR really put it into perspective.

This should go without saying, but you all need to get your ships down to the Pleiades and check out a Non-Human SS. The thargoids (and the wreckage) are crazy in VR. Keep your distance and don't tick the thing off, and stick around long enough to see it high wake out.

Giving the Rift headset to my 6-year-old daughter was a defining moment. Sometimes getting others to see and feel the VR experience is stronger than actually seeing it yourself.

I watched her look around inside the Python cockpit/bridge in awe and suddenly walk off towards the back entry door - including trying to take the small step up behind the cockpit seats... only to firmly meet the real-life study wall and end up on her backside! Luckily no damage to her or the Rift.

Case in point - she thought it was real. It was scary and hilarious at the same time.

I say "wow" every time I put the headset on... got a friend into the seat and my daughter... both loved it and were awed by the experience. Enjoy visiting as many different stations as you can , sights, planets, different systems, it's all spectacular!!
