Correct shadowing in space

I've a question and a big wish:
In my opinion, the whole shadow drawing is wrong and disturbs the game feeling. I can live with the wrong acceleration model in space (permanent power force for flying in vacuum is silly, but it's a game), BUT the shadows are really disturbing, because in vacuum you just can see a no-light/light boarder, no “grayscale”.
Have read some postings about lighting and shadowing, but could not find the basic answer, WHY the shadowing done in such a wrong way. Light scaling depends on atmosphere, why I get in space (startport, surface without atmosphere) no clear, cutted shadow?
Do we have the chance to get a correct shadowing? THX!

That's one of the reasons why I fly with flight assist off, then the engines shut down if you reach your max allowed speed.

Could you provide photo's of real life that highlight what's wrong with the lighting? What do you mean with 'grayscale'?
An in game explanation for the lighting could be that the ship canopy is very high tech and boosts dim things, while dimming bright things.
Many things reflect light: planets, other space ships/stations, extrusions of your own ship which do hit the light. These would all light up shadowed parts of your space ship.
Calculating how all these things would cast light on your ship will get complicated. But if the shadows are absolutely black, while the starlit sides are super bright, it would be obvious if this was not done, possibly breaking immersion even more.
