Thanks for the congratulations, but I'll be honest, I can't really claim I helped for the conquest of space. The best I did was send a ball on a rooftop back in school.
If the school director ask, that wasn't me.Did it come back, or was it caught by the gutter?

Yuri Gagarin was very humble and is often quoted for wishing peace after he went in space. Most astronauts, of all nationality, were often humbled by how tiny and fragile our world look from space, and how ridiculous our petty disputes sound like.I love how we’re all tiptoeing around the elephant in the room (no politics on the forum!). Of course war isn’t politics, it’s just war.
Nevertheless, Yuri Gagarin’s first orbit of Earth on 12th April 1961 wasn’t just the feat of a political power that just happens to have currently gone bananas, it was an historical occasion for all humankind. And that, I think, was the OP’s impetus for starting this thread. An historical event of significance. After all, are we to besmirch the achievement of Columbus for what subsequently happened to the Aztecs and the Incas in the Americas? I think not.
Thanks Erei. I did not know that about Columbus. Interesting (and disturbing) stuff.Yuri Gagarin was very humble and is often quoted for wishing peace after he went in space. As for Columbus, he and his family (mostly his brother) committed so many atrocities the King and Queen of Spain themselves were shocked and removed their governance rights upon the newly discovered territories. They were even sent to jail for a time.
His, and his brother's journal are so dark it's not shown to the public. It's very much not NSFW. I had the occasion to learn of one part, where he "gifted" a native woman to his brother. I'll spare you the details, I think you can imagine the rest.
He was a very evil person, and deserve to be remembered as such. But he was also the one responsible for the re-re-re-re discovery of the Americas. At least that one stuck.
