cost of replacing ships is astromonically low

OK heres where I don't make many friends. People love free stuff but ED goes out of its way to make things look really good..except when you lose a ship. I recently lost my Mk III in a fight and was devastated, until I remembered I was playing ED again after a long absence. Here replacing ships is nearly free, my Mk III cost me 5200 to replace, and that included all the hardware, silly at best. Why should anyone care if they get killed? Theres no loss, no reason to care. Yes, I like things realistic and the graphics here is nice and stations look good, np there. Everything seems aimed to be as realistic as possible, so why kill the immersion with free, or nearly free ships? I can certainly understand 1 free option, the starter ship, every game does that, even Eve. But after that if you lose a ship you spent good money for, there needs to be a sense of loss...here there is none. That's my opinion, and I'm not trolling. One statement and I'm out.

Early on ships are a doddle if you lose them. And they can be easy to lose.

However, my Anaconda costs over 20,000,000cr to replace. While I can make that up in an hour or two, you need to strike a good balance between fun and realism.

If my Anaconda cost too much to replace, the risk off loss would equal a heck of a lot of game time, and would put me off using it.

If your "MkIII" only cost 5,200cr to replace, it means it was only worth 104,000cr.

I'm not sure what ship that even is. A Cobras and Vipers base value is around 300,000cr I think. Or a 15,000cr rebuy.

This.

Just because your cobra is a cheap P.O.S. doesn't mean other people's ships aren't. Once (if more likely) you get a big-boy ship, you'll understand. It takes a lot of time to earn a rebuy on anything bigger than an FAS.

Presumably you started the game in a Cobra with a KS / Backer's App tier reward - in which case unless modified, the replacement starter ship is completely free....

I think we have different definitions of "a lot of time".

Over the life of the game, the rate at which money can be earned has increased dramatically, while many of the costs (including ship costs, fines/bounties, fuel) haven't gone up at all. I share the OP's opinion that this has left things a little unbalanced.

And the rate of money has been reduced dramatically recently. Basically, if you don't do Quince, it takes 10-20 hours to get that 'conda rebuy.

I think they need to raise the rebuy cost but add a new feature that let the user see how many Full and low rebuy before they need to worry. So let take my ship I have 100 million credits but my rebuy is 4 million. So I know I can lose my ship 25 times.

"A lot of time" is a relative term anyway. Sometimes I get loads of time to play, so a few hours to cover a rebuy is nothing.
Other times I get hardly any time, so those few hours to recoup my losses feel worse.

In most cases, a 2-3 passenger missions can pay off my rebuy, and they can take around an hour to 90 minutes depending on the spread of destinations.

That said, I've only ever lost my Anaconda to me flattening things like skimmers or eagles when docking carelessly. Lol
Hence she's named Pancake IV.

Say that again when i'm loosing my Corvette. Rebuy is 50 million, yes 50.000.000 credits
That's definitly not free! A stock small ship is for sure cheap but try to equip a sidewinder with enhanced drives and it will cost already 100.000 credits rebuy! So the 5% of shipvalue is for sure enough punishment to not repeat the mistake that destroyed the ship ;)

Just as an addition, my current most used ships rebuy:

Corvette 50.000.000
Anaconda 40.000.000
Cutter 35.000.000
Python 15.000.000
Cobra MK.IV 500.000
FDL 5.000.000

As mentioned earlier, the quoted 5,200 Cr. rebuy for a Cobra MkIII implies a starter ship - as a 5,200 Cr. rebuy means a value of 104,000 and no Cobra MkIII costs that....

It rather looks like the rebuy in a starter ship has given the OP a false impression of rebuy costs.

Perhaps the OP would like to cover my Cutter's 50M rebuy fee next time I die - not that I'll ever die in it, C8 prismatics be blessed.

I, for one, would be much more interested in making death a matter of more than money.

For an example, the base rebuy cost of a ship could be increased significantly, but then the ship would be put on a timer, and waiting would cause the rebuy cost to decrease until it reached below what it is now (after a few days).

This way, players would have to choose between losing more money, or having to do something else in the meantime. To me, that'd be a lot more interesting.

1) It would be a good credit sink, since rich players wouldn't want to wait.

2) It would cut newer players some slack by giving them the option to lower their rebuy cost.

3) players of this game actually wanted timed ship transfers, so a bit more waiting certainly isin't going to bother them...

Do you work in insurance?

I do believe losing a ship while Wanted, (and in their territory), should have a bigger sting.

My personal favourite is ship impounding, and being given a free sidewinder and spawning in some backwater prison colony.
You can immediately fly back to claim your ship, but if you're murdering random CMDRs, at least it'll keep you out of the way for a while. :D

Quick question Lucius-Darcia what your total balance you have right now?

5,5 billion in assets, 250mil in cash right now. I have 30 ships overall and just named my most expensive/most used ships.

I like hybrid builds of bi-weaves and modded reactive surface composite which makes them VERY expensive :(
My inara profile (signature) is 1 month old in terms of assets. Ships i don't bother there anymore since engineers.

As a few people have stated.. The early ships are meant to be cheap to replace, so people can slowly get used to the high learning curve...

Just wait until you start hitting FDL's Pythons, Belugas, not to mention the top 3 Anaconda, Cutter and Corvette.

Doing a lot of testing means that I often put myself into very dangerous situations, and although loosing 50 million on my cutter wont have too much of a negative effect on my bank balance, it still hurts let me tell you.

Last night I was doing silly stuff in a beluga and I lost 10 million, sure I can just shrug it off, but still, 10 million is 10 million.. lol
