Hardware & Technical Couch Hotas project

Posted this originally in the Hotas couch thread in the ED general board but though I should move it over here so as not to take over that other thread with a personal project.

Hiya guys seeing as I don't have a dedicated game room and I have to play on our main hdtv in the living room I was thinking of trying to make a mini couch simpit so to speak. Like the OP I though of the couchmaster but it does not seem to be quite right for a joystick/hotas set up, that said I am looking to maybe use it as a kind of basic pattern to make my own version of a couch master.

Right now I play most of my games with the KB on my lap and (usually mouse in in the spot where my wingman is placed in the photo) mouse on right arm rest at least for fantasy type mmos/games. For games using a joystick I sometimes play like in this photo:

or I sit on the couch leaning forwards and play set up like this:

Yes! I have mounted my X52 Pro throttle and joystick to a lapdawg using tie down straps. Works great with my feet up on the ottoman. You'll probably want a HOTAS with a twist rudder (such as the X52 Pro). I will be getting a Warthog eventually, but when then also need pedals - and then the couch won't work as well.

Hmm that lawpdog looks like it has possibilities, from what I see it is made of aluminum, I imagine that includes the adjustable "legs" and the push button adjustments?

I am kind of wanting to make something that will allow me to have my keyboard centered right over my lap with place for my mouse on the right side BUT I would like to be able to put a joystick, throttle on each side of that.

I would like the keyboard to be at an angle but the mouse to remain "flat" like it was on your mouse pad on your desk.

Here found an image that is close to what I would like to have while looking up base dimensions of various sticks:

I started on a cardboard prototype, a couple pics of what I would like the top to look like:

eQuyE6ll.jpg

h2TIV5zl.jpg

on the left I made a spot where I could put a throttle either next to the KB or closer to me for the right side there is a spot for a stick and a mouse a little further away. I would like it if I could make the whole thing modular.

Thinking maybe make it in three or 4 pieces that can be added on or removed as needed.

1 ~ center piece for KB
2 ~ left piece for throttle or second stick
3 ~ right piece for stick
4 ~ far right piece for mouse .......maybe combine piece 3 and 4.
5 ~ Base piece.....will depend if I go foam cushion route or lapdawg frame route.

Now I need to decide:

1 ~ find right combination or set up for max comfort, basically find the spots for each piece of equipment, angle of KB, distances etc.
2 ~ do I use a lapdawg as a "frame" or go the big foam cushions route like the couchmaster.
3 ~ what materials do I want to use for max durability, comfort and low cost.

Most likely the old wingman force 3D I have will be replaced by a CH Fighterstick or maybe a VKB Fat Black Mamba it is so smexy but so costly so will have to think about it although the quality of the VKB looks really good.

Today I took a quick look at materials for the side cushions. Didn't realize foam was so expensive. Was thinking Lux R foam but may try to find some styrofoam with a 1" foam layer around it.

Still need to decide what type of material it will be stuffed in.

I sat on the couch with the cardboard prototype and decided to change a few things, I dont have cushions yet so just used pillows to get a feel for what would be comfy.

I think this will be in 3 parts. Each cushion will be one part and "board that holds the throttle, keyboard and right stick will be one solid part. The mouse board will be attached to this BUT I will possibly make this part hinged so it can be put down when not in use. I may also add in a cup hold right above the mouse section which could be hinged as well.

I have lowered the angle of the keyboard section.

Today I bought things I need to make this happen.

One 4'x8' sheet of plywood 3/8" ~ $8.50
One 2'x8' sheet of 2" foam ~ $20.00
Misc -hinge, glue etc ~ $8.00
faux leather and 1" foam ~ $36.00

Total so far ~ 72.50$

Still need to get some materiel to cover this all up and possibly a 1" memory foam mattress topper, local shop has some 35$, but I have an older regular foam one I may use.

With the plywood I cut out a 10"x40" piece, a 10"x20" piece and finally a 8"x8" piece. The 10"x20" piece goes on the 40"peice where my keyboard will sit, I glued a 1"x1" piece of foam between them at the back so my keyboard will sit at an angle. Still working out how I will make the 8"x8" mouse piece hinge and lock in place.

With the foam I cut out eight 10"x24" pieces. With the foam pieces I will glue together 3 pieces to make two 10"x24" blocks that are 6" high, each block will have one 10"x24" piece that is 2" high that I can add to it to adjust the height.

Had time to fiddle around and ran into a snag, my moms sewing machine is on the fritz so the cushions are on hold for a little till it gets fixed.

Added a 1" high density foam to the tops.

In some old pillow cases for now.

I have worked on the board section some.

I made the center part hinged so I can lift it up to fiddle with wires and my powered usb hub. I also made a "slot" in the back so I can slip in wires from there so they can connect to my usb hub.

Main board is painted for now but when I get finished with the cushions if I have enough faux leather left I will cover the board with it. Presently I also have my little mouse "board" covered as well.

Got one cushion done and will do the next one after Xmas. Now if I had to redo it I would make the rigid foam smaller all around so I could put a 2inch high density foam all around instead of just on top as with rigid foam on the sides and underneath it is much more difficult to get the faux leather covering 100% "tight". Ideally you would just use a big block of the high density foam but it was not having any luck finding any at good prices.

In this pic you can see the end that is still open, I am still thinking how I will close it..maybe velcro or even buttons as I want to be able to reopen it when needed.

One thing.

Why is the surrounding area, so clean?

Do you have a special feature on your image editor, which conceals the junk and stains? Or is it something else.

Please do tell.

Eh not quite sure I get the question? Which surrounding area are you talking about?

My couch? lol

Pics are taken with my digital camera and uploaded to pc/imgur and edited to be shrunk down a little so they are not huge when posted here.

The creativity is impressive and interesting.

I'm just a bit disturbed at how clean the carpets and couch are.

Meant in good humour. Sorry if it seemed otherwise.

The console is a nice idea. I use a 33 button keypad which I picked up from Amazon, for my keyboard controls. The keys have been re-labled using double sided sticky tape.

I tried using the keyboard but kept forgetting where keys were. Having guide beside me on a bit of paper just annoyed me.

This is my layout. Information, not intended to steel your thunder.

Ah no worries

, I vacuum the carpet mostly everyday :p and the couch usually has a blanket on it for everyday use!

I thought of using a keypad but I often like to alt tab out of games and surf the web at times so decided to try and do something that leaves me full access to my keyboard.

I quickly added some velcro to the unfinished end, I just used velcro to make the folds for the edges but I really need to maybe iron them and glue them down so it makes a nice flat finish if I want it to look more like the sewn edges.

Took a pic to show what the project looks like overall, will post another when both cushions are done and the usb hub is installed.

I finally cut out the faux leather material I needed to make the second cushion covering and also covered the whole center piece since the wood look wasn't doing it for me. Have some f. leather left over too.

Here's what the center piece looks like, will take a pic of the whole thing set up when the second cushion covering is sown up.

Got the last cushion done, might have to iron one out a little as the covering was put away for awhile and there's a fold from where it was folded, see the 3rd pic. I will also fix the ends so the flaps are velcroed down tighter but this is pretty much it and add a small layer of soft foam on the other ends to make it nice tight instead of looking loose(look where the wire of the t16000m goes down), see pic 4.

Have to say while doing this little project I have learned quite a few tidbits which will make future project easier.
