Could I ask your opinion of this plan of mine?

I'm just 6,700LY from Maia now with the intention of buying meta alloys for the Farseer Lady. I've also realised I could buy the Soontill Relics at Ngurii for the other engineer if I loop past that system as well

The idea being that I get these items to get my foot in the door and sell enough exploration data from my DWE loop to get maximum influence with them both.

The caveat is that I have a fairly stripped down explora-conda with minimal shields, limited power and no weapons. I was thinking getting to Maia, upgrading what I can (with the obvious sacrifice in jump range) as I have 110MCr in the bank and jumping to each system / engineer to try and get the best engineering buff I can. The only weapons I'll be tempted to buy will be minelayers.

Once that's done I'll sell the rest to SEPP (if someone tells me where to go) to help out their influence. Once that's done I'll be in a position to help with the last CG

Will this work? Am I missing anything I need before hitting the bubble? Oh, I'll be staying in Kamzel / Solo for the duration.

This is how outfitting in Maia looks. Not so good. Maybe stay in group mode and ask for some escort?

Or go to some frontier system and buy a fast ship, like a Cobra Mk III, that allow you to escape from any hostile NPC. :)

That should be everything you need to get access, but I'd recommend stopping somewhere to upgrade your shields before picking up the cargo. Having anything in your cargo hold will attract attention (yes, even biowaste) and put your data at risk.
Don't fight though, just run. NPC's have teeth now.

I did think about that, but can't I only upgrade the modules actually fitted to the ship? Or should I buy the Cobra, go scooting around the bubble getting the data sold then go back for the Anaconda? I do have a MkIV and an Asp lying around somewhere

If you are not hauling any cargo (no matter HOW insignificant) you should be fine. (And if interdicted...Boost,Boost,Jump should get you out).
One word of advice... DO NOT be tempted to snoop around any USS until you have handed over your data.
How do I know this?? I came back from the deep, dropped 5 - 6 Million of data at Farseer, got full access. Then thought I would cruise out and pick up a Soontil Relic then hop over to the other engineer.
2nd Jump into that process I come across a Decoded USS... first time back in bubble... how bad could this be??
I still cannot process what exactly happened... I was looking at some objects in space then suddenly 4 NPC's dropped in, before I could even move BAM!! Insurance screen and a LOT of exploration data gone.
(And all because I couldn't leave those escape pods out in the deep!!)
I actually spent several minutes just staring at the computer screen.
Oh well, such is life...

If I were you I would do that other way. Sell your data where you want except last 20-25 millions Cr. Get a ship you want/like and then unlock and rank up with Felicity and Elvira. In worst scenario you will loose only twenty few millions.

don't.

a) npc spawns depends on shiptype. flying a conda with high value cargo spawns anaconda and FDL npcs.

b) return via a safe harbour - high security system at the edge of the bubble with station close to entry point, to fit shields, point defense, scb. etc. i used HR 5349 for that. it is reasonable close to ngurii.

c) i went over HR 5349, refitted with shields etc., bought a courier close to fraseer, met with a fellow mod, who dropped me 1 MA at fraseer, sold exploration data, bought enhanced peformance thruster for that courier (safety boost speed) and went on selling data all over the bubble. same would work with martuk.

i'm sure, many here will like to meet up with you and drop you soontic relicts and/or meta alloys. i would be willing to do so - pm me, if you want. if you do it alone: reoutfit well, better change to a smaller ship AspE(Cobra/Courier), and get the MA from maia later.

yes, you'll need 8-11 mio for fraseer L5 access, the same for martuk - but there is no need to level both to L5, you want martuk to L3-4 for invitation to qwendt. on the other hand, you can get several permits with explo data, raise your rep with factions that give engineer invites, or help sepp. i'm happy that i did the 2 engineers first.

I had a similar idea when I came back from DW. I intended to sell almost all of my cartographics and save a few million for Farseer. Unfortunately, I got a bit carried away and never noticed that I'd run out of pages of data to sell (the interface doesn't tell you how many pages you have after all) and sold the lot

I would advise doing this though, but keep an eye on your data. You will need ~10 million each to get each of them up to lvl5. As Dregory The Crow says, that way, you will only loose that 20 million or so should the worst happen.

As for the initial entry point, safe harbour is your friend. Pick a high security system on the edge of the bubble. Ensure that it's not in a war / civil war state etc and has a station with a large landing pad close to the main star. If you're ultra paranoid (like I was) ensure that your path to this system goes through uninhabited systems only. Once in the system, don't fly directly to the station (unless it's really close), but fly a loop outside of the main traffic lanes to stop random NPC interdictions. I did this and never saw a single NPC until my target system. I also never even had an NPC attempt to interdict me.

Oh, and don't forget to request docking permission ;)

Sound advice from @goemon . I would also add that Elvira Martuuk is based on a world with 1.2g surface gravity, so careful on your approach. Felicity Farseer is based on a small moon with 0.09g surface gravity, so perhaps visit her first just in case. Fly safe! (And maybe get an escort?)

Okay, so don't go tooling around in my 'conda. Looks like the best bet is to grab a MkIII and do the rounds in that. I'm coming in from the direction of Jaques at the moment, so I'll look for a suitable system to dock at, buy a Cobra and kit it out. Then I'll get the bits bought, data sold and then go back for the Anaconda. Hmmmm I only need one more visit to a black market to unlock the 3rd engineer....

Roentgen Ring in 26 Ophiuchi, right on the edge of the bubble, sells a Viper 3 which is the fastest ship in Einsteinian space. You could use it as a taxi, although it is gonna be seriously short legs compared to an Exploraconda.

It has four hardpoints, so you could use it to load out a lot of mines, shock mines for escape or regular if you want kills. Just remember to get you opponents lined up Behind you.

I've been out in the black for over a month now, and don't plan on returning for another month...but when I do I'm going to take only uninhabited systems right to my home system, get an escort, swap my Asp for my superfast, supershielded Cobra, sell a LOT of data then go to Farseer. Just daren't risk going to Farseer in my Asp, I'll feel like selling the majority of my data first so if anything untoward happens I'll only lose a few million.

The problem is: I simply have no idea how much data to sell. It could be anywhere between 70 and 120 Million, so I'm going to bee-line for a safe system, get a Cobra a-rated and buzz around the bubble like some kind of demented bumble bee :)

HR 5349 has a cobra, but only 4B fsd + thrusters, when not in boom.

I did exactly what you propose, Traveller, and had no problems. My combat rating is deadly but I have no PP affiliations and obviously had nothing in my hold, and never once got interdicted. Having said that, I did first get my clipper and then went around unlocking engineers, and that ship is very safe to get around in. If you have a fast and not-made-of-paper ship like that you could consider grabbing that first. Otherwise, set down in a port that has good modules selection and get good shielding, scb's, chaff, heatsinks and point defense, you'll be safe flying around. As much as people complained about NPC's, now that they fixed the rail beams of doom I don't find them particularly challenging, even Elite ones aren't that big of a problem - and they don't seem to interdict me for no reason at all.

Thanks for the advice, offers of help and encouragement folks :)

More than a little nerve-racking to be returning after being out since February.

I would swap the ECM for a shield booster. Should easily be able to run away in a cobra before your shields drop.

I remember when I got back. It certainly was a worrying time lol. It was fine though, no issues for me.

Once you have cargo though the old "big haul" cough 1 tonne interdictions will commence - not a at silly levels but chances are you'll get one before you've collected the your gifts and delivered them all.

Two points:
1) Your build: ECM is a way to defend against torpedoes (that can take a few hits from PDTs, if they are effective at all) that I'd use on slow big ships but for a Cobra Mk3 that can avoid and outrun them it's missiles that are the problem, so I would say a PDT is better. Some CMDRs like shield boosters but I've been attacked in a pre-2.1 combat-rigged Cobra by a Viper Mk4 that spammed missiles and was lucky to get out in one piece (I had heat sinks that worked as decoys, else I'd have been in trouble). Since then I make sure all my ships have chaff and a PDT. (Also, you don't really need the 4A Power Plant, 3A is plenty, and 3D sensors are also fine).
2) Safe havens: There's a thread somewhere about what makes a good haven but I can't find it atm. I would suggest one of the pair of Herme and Gandui, both high-tech Imperial systems on the Frontier with reasonable outfitting at stations that are <10ls from the entry point. I did some outfitting there in my Asp when I returned from DWE.
.
Fly safe and good luck upon your return. ( You'll have more data to sell than you seem to think given how long you've been out ;) )
