Could this canned project become the Planetary/ FPS element of ED ?

From 2007-2011 Frontier worked on a game called The Outsider, which turned into a Bourne Identity tie-in with Codemasters. The game got eventually canned due to funding being pulled but Frontier still own the IP I'd expect. So, purely speculating, given the GTA style gameplay and FPS/ Third-Person viewpoint, could the original concept be adapted to become what David Braben and the devs have hinted at will come to ED ? If so, then this gives a hint of what to expect....

I don't see why not. IIRC it was even built with the Cobra engine. If they do use it I hope it has a good character creation set up.

Ah, so then if it uses the same COBRA engine then it's entirely possible :)
Yeah, I'd like to create my character and even have his/ her stats and bio available in-game when you scan a CMDR.

Though they'll have to come up with some way to make equipment not easily available.
Currently a ton of personal weapons/non-lethal weapons/reactive armor isn't exactly expensive (compared to buying ships). And I don't think my character would need an entire ton of each :D

As Bale said in Batman Begins; "well at least we'll have spares"

*sigh*. No fps mode please.. Running around with a gun isn't elite and has never been a part of elite.

If you truly desire that, buy one of the millions of fps games that saturate all game platforms at the current time.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is coming. EVA from one ship to another. Hand to hand or small arms combat on ships and likely stations and planets.

Who said there will be a FPS mode coming in ED?
That will break the game and I truly wish, hope and pray it will not come.
Let the children play.

Cheers,
Robin

That is Old elite. This is new Elite:Dangerous. Different games.

Oh man you are so right. FPS has no business being in Elite.

Good thing we are playing Elite: Dangerous. I can't wait for more to be added to this already fun game.

*sigh* Why not just go back and play the original if you don't want change? *sigh**sigh**sigh**sigh*

I remember Frontier stating when 'Outsider' was first announced, When asked about Elite 4 --

" ... we will do elite after finishing 'Outsider' and we will apply to Elite what we have learned from 'Outsider' .. "

Words to that effect anyway.

An FPS element for Elite 4 was envisaged from the start I'd say.
Looks allright. Very GTA-ish.

99.9% of planets in ED will be void of life, but the engine here could be used to present a mechanism to land on the planets you discover / explore and go walk about. Looks like a great place to start.

(not sure if i'm enamoured with a GTA style play mode though.. But for sure give me rolling plains and hills and resource sites to explore on foot with a buddy or 5)

Good to know about this project. i wasn´t sure if FD had any previous experience creating first person games and this looks good enough.
@Steve50 probably you don´t need to get out of your ship, so you can keep playing as we are playing now and don´t pay attention to the fps element. Or may be you can get out of your ship and take a walk around without the need to shoot anything. Just wear a bullet proof suit, just in case

I think that makes perfect sense, why wouldn't they draw on skills and resources they already have?

I personally would prefer the fps side of the game to be limited to walking around the ships and boarding others ships, I think making a subpar fps (and lets be honest; it will be subpar to dedicated titles such as battlefield and ARMA) on stations and planets will harm the game more than improve it by tarnishing the astonishing level of the space simulator experience we have with an inferior fps experience.

I'd like landing on planets to be more about exploration than FPS, any shooting bit could be limited to missions so it's avoidable for people who don't want it

Planets being kinda big, might be worth packing some sort of land vehicle in the cargo bay. You thought you landed pretty close to that mountain/crater - but on foot - gonna take you ages to get near it.

Never really understood why people who are presumably Ok with shooting the crepe out of spacecraft have such a downer about shooting people who aren't in spacecraft.
