I'm a bit scared to see the modding thread being closed while it was all going so well.
Does Frontier not want it anymore? Please tell me this isn't the case. Mods are the #1 thing that makes a game last.
I wonder if it was my post about modding game mechanics that made the op/frontier go nope. I hope not. I am sorry if it is so. [mouth shut]
The balance to this argument is that there's a lot of overhead currently when larger structures are made from lots of little objects, and there's only so much run-time optimisation that can be done on those. One of the more compelling arguments for modding is that you could model those structures out-of-game and do some of the more traditional offline optimisations. Indeed, a tool that could take a blueprint, merge it into a single object and spit out an .ovl file would be holy grail type territory...Custom 3D models is a no-no for me, the game barely runs full parks with the scenery pieces Frontier themselves made, plus Frontier has said that some of the 3D models have up to 6 LODs, that's some serious optimization. I can't say that users who upload their own models will go through the same trouble of making it optimized. Compatibility issues is another reason, the game is still being developed, if something changes internally with the game, that could possibly break imported models (or mods). I remember the very early days of RCT3 custom models, they were a hit or a miss.
When the game is in it's finished state where all features are implemented and nothing but small patches are issued, then they could green-light custom models.
I'm sure that Frontier is on board with mods, they've gone through great lengths to include custom music, images and video in the game, but for the reasons I've stated is why they're probably not going to support it to the extent that people want (3D models, textures, overrides, etc.) ,so early on in the game's life.

As for why the thread was closed, it was the OP's request. Frontier are currently okay with discussion of modding, as long as it doesn't go into the more murky territory (e.g. if someone were to find a way to bypass the DLC restrictions, it would be a no-no to discuss it openly).

Haven't you read the posts by AndyC in the other thread?
I haven't had a chance to glance through it at great length, no.

Yup. However: it could be that they, or someone higherup, has changed their minds and wanted it to quietly fade away or something. It all seems rather weird to me.
