Could we have more than one character?

I am starting a long trip with my current character in Elite universe and probably "I will never come back". No... I am not going to explode myself, just to go back
to participate of some event in the populated universe and don't think that buying another copy under a different user name is a solution, at least not one that I would like.

For this case, I think that would be great if was added to the game, as soon as possible, the possibility of having one more character (one more would
be enough for me).

This way I could keep traveling far far away with one character, doing all the exploration that I want, without the fear to lose great things and moments
happening in the populated universe, for what I could use another character to participate.

It does not sound the kind of thing that never were brought before here, so, if it was discussed in the past and some dev already answered, sorry, I just missed that.

We were supposed to have three commander slots and ironman mode. Both seem to have been become part of the cutting room floor clutter that was the original plan for ED.

This has been requested loads, and I thought it was on the cards to be implemented at some point (though not necessarily soon). I would like to have more than one commander, so that I can play different roles with each one (two or three would be great).

Of course, the current option that works is to buy the game a second time...

It's been asked for, but it's not currently in the pipleline as far as an incoming feature, last I heard. It's definitely requested, for precisely that reason you mentioned; the ability to have a long-distance commander, while not being excluded from coreworld fun due to the distance gap.

It degrades the immersion in the game. Part of your choice to go and explore 500000LYs away, is that you sacrifice some of the cooler local things in the populated systems. While I myself, give up seeing all the cool distant solarsystems that you get to experience. It's another piece of the game that makes you choose one way or another...sacrifice one thing to get another. I personally like the "one person, one commander" model.

For example... if you want to become a pirate and ruin your good name... it is something you have to calculate before you make that decision. If you had two commander slots, there would be a lot of people playing trader/BHer in one... and a pirate in the other. No thanks.

Pfffttt...

:D

I'm not an "multi char" player...
I wouldn't make use of the option and i don't like the idea.
But it was "promised" and i know many other players would like it.

No flames from me, i completely agree. I like the opportunity cost of doing one thing over another, gives me a headache deciding sometimes.

However, i do think its great to see people enthusiastic about trying out all the different aspects of the game.

More slots would be great!

Those who want them would be very glad to have them, and those who don't want them don't need to use them.

This immersion crap again. If it degrades your immersion you don't make multiple commanders, simple. You're attempting to force your preconceptions on other players. The logic also fails when it comes to implementing Iron Man (if they ever do), since you would be forcing people to play only that mode if it interested them. As for the 'griefing alt', pff the people who want to grief will do it anyway. If more people felt able to experiment with pvp without the fear of trashing their 'main' the game might be a little more interesting.

Of course the cynical side of me is now waiting for packs of 5 Vibrant commander slots to appear on the shop.

More slots = more players considering playing on open = more players who play like pirates = the open gets more players who can make the game more attractive to those who are looking for a multiplayer game, and not an empty and hollow space.

You misunderstand. Part of the reason that it IS such a trying decision to stay on the good path.. or become a psyco killer or pirate... is because if you play that play style, it fundamentally changes the game for you, and those around you. If you could do BOTH, I may encounter your psyco alter-ego, where you have no vested interest in retaining your in-game notoriety (or lack-there-of). Your name/game/commander could basically become a throw-away. It would adversely affect my game play, as there would be x2 the number of commanders out there that just flat out wouldn't care about that slot's outcome. Everybody would have a primary, and a less-important secondary.

I'm not forcing my pre-conceptions on anybody. This is just my opinion. How am I forcing, again?

get rid of solo, while we're at it.

Sorry, I don't buy the immersion excuse either nor the business about exploring requires a 'commitment'. This is a game! I have enough commitments in my life already!

Personally, I'd be happy to select which ship I want to start with when I login. Then I could select my ship out in deep space when I feel like it or another when I want to wing up with a mate or participate in a community project.

I would like very much to be able to start over in all the different rolls knowing now what i now know and a second slot would allow me to do that without killing the char that i've spent so much time creating but.... too many games out there have been ruined by just that. A good char that makes the credits and gives them to a bad char that causes, for lack of a better word, grief.
So from my point of view - no thank you !

Michael said in a post, multiple savegame slots is coming but not soon (tm)

Is this right..? I remember someone saying they had ditched the idea because of the potential to exploit and accrue large bounties etc. someone also said that it had been abandoned because it would encourage unrealistic recklessness if you had "disposable" characters. No idea where these thoughts came from though...
Maybe I dreamt it! :p
Am tempted to start over soon, though my current character is a seasoned veteran now and he deserves to live, so I may end up buying another copy of the game.

so I may end up buying another copy of the game.

Sadly, the longer it goes the harder it is to avoid suspecting that this is Frontier's primary motivation in the delay. I refuse to believe that there is any technical reason not to implement multiple slots. As for exploits, bounty farming etc.. those things are easy to do with one commander, FD are taking no action against those exploiting the bounty system to sell credits for real cash so to refuse multiple slots on that basis would be hugely disingenuous. A bit like their marketing policy with ship skins it's unfortunately looking more and more like 'get as much out of them while we can'.
