Newcomer / Intro Counter Missions - Fail!

So I'm rolling in my Cobra out of Belu last night where I have based myself lately, since the Values Party there loves me so much, with a nice little mission off the boards to croak 3 pirate scabs over in Gat 2. I get there and start hitting USS till I find an Asp who sends me a counter mission to go back to Belu and wack 3 cops instead. I was kinda expecting this, since I read on the wikia these type counter missions are frequent. Heres where things get kinda weird. So I check the updated mission in my log, and read the text, but don't do anything yet except escape out of the left hand console, throttle back till I sort this out and decide to teach this presumptuous Ass, I mean ASP, a lesson. So I go back in to the console bring up the counter mission and abandon it (or decline it, whetever the option is, the only other option being to accept it) So it dissappears, My original mission shows up behind it, only now its labeled as "Failed" . WTH? All I can do now is abandon it as well, shake my fist at the Asp and blitz back to Belu with my tail between my legs.

Is this a bug? Can you not ditch the counter mission and keep the original? Or should I just have responded by ignoring his counter mission entirely and drawing a middle finger on his canopy with my multi-cannons?

When you abandon the counter-offer mission, it abandons the original offer as well. You need to just ignore it and as soon as you kill another pirate the counter offer is replaced by the original offer.

Always just ignore the alternative missions and carry on with what you were doing. If you didn't want to do the original mission, why would you accept it in the first place.

Actually there is a rare case where you might accept it:
Yoy are trying to rep up with a faction, but there are no missions for them. Take a mission for the opposition, go out and find the alternative which will be of benefit to the faction you want to help. Its a rare occasion, but I have done this once just to prove to myself that it actually worked.

Because I wanted to do it. I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that if I canceled the counter mission, my original mission would still be active underneath it. Sounds logical, right?
