Newcomer / Intro Couple questions about this game

Hello,

To start off, I've never played a space sim before, but I saw some let's play on youtube for this, and thought that I would give it a shot. But before I do, I have some questions.

  1. So, I hear that joystick is the way to go here, and that makes perfect sense. But for the time being, all I have is keyboard and mouse. How playable is this game on a keyboard and mouse?
  2. I noticed that there are two modes: single-player and multi-player. My question is, does the progress I make on single-player carry over when I go on multi-player, or are the two separate? (i.e. if I play single-player for couple days, and decided that I am ready for multi-player, will I need to start over?)
  3. All of the let's play that I have seen appears to be solo players - by that, I mean they just travel on their own, etc., not necessarily playing on single-player. My question is, what's the multiplayer like besides 1v1 dogfighting? (i.e. Are there clans? Do people travel together to make sure that a large cargo doesn't get stolen? Do people gank (pirate ships) together? Are there large scale dogfighting? etc.)

Finally, not really about the game, but is this forum just flat out not compatible with chrome? I do not see Image Verification on my chrome, and I have to get on IE :/

Thanks!

1) Very, once you're used to it.

2) Yes!

3) People can and do travel together but usually only if they know each other IRL. There are more 'social' features coming in the next few months to make coop easier.

I'm running Chrome now, you may want to re install it or update it if you're having trouble, make sure to save your bookmarks if you do!

...erm, not quite about number 2. You DO NOT have to start over. Everything you make in Solo, you can take to Open (multiplayer). Just thought that needed clearing up.

Hi - Welcome OP.

I am on Chrome it seems okay for me.

I used Keyboard and mouse for over six months and was very happy with it. What I found was that you need to take some time to get used to the roll/pitch and yaw, plus the dead zones so it suits your game style.
The defaults didn't work for me and I spent a while getting something that works.

1. The game us absolutely playable with KB/M and it is controller agnostic, i.e mouse emulates joystick. I am playing using HOTAS and rudder pedals but these were rudder pedals that make all the difference as they facilitate the controls by much.
2. These are called Solo and Open play and not Single Player and Multiplayer. You can switch between the modes whenever you want.
3. No clans but there are some private groups. More Multiplayer features are expected with Wings that is going to be released in March.

After making 2 posts there should be no need to pass image verification and you will be able to use Chrome.

Hi AppleSouj,

The only difference between Solo mode & Open Play is you will not run into any other human players while in Solo mode. Aside from that, any progress you make in either game mode transfers over to the other :)

If you are feeling uncomfortable with playing with others, you can just switch to Solo. This can also come in handy when you might need to get into a system which is being blockaded by other human players.

One of the main differences is that having other human players around introduces that 'random' element of gameplay, which I really do love, even if it works out to be not in my favour. The most memorable experiences I have had in game have been because of other players, even though many of those experiences were, technically, putting me at a disadvantage; human players make the game random & amazing and you will have stories to tell!! :D

I guess playing with a Joystick is the best way to go... However, like any control interface, it takes time to get the handle of. I have had no problem playing the game with a keyboard & mouse. I am simply used to this combination, and while I do have an X-55, I actually have not just played enough of the game with it to become proficient. It actually reminds me of when I had to learn to use a PS3 controller. I never had consoles growing up, and so I never had the opportunity to get used to using those style of controllers. But eventually I played more games at a friends house, and in about a month I began to master the gamepads. It should be a similair learning curve with a Joystick/HOTAS; Just do it, and you will get the hang of it! :)

I think that Elite Dangerous is currently lacking from good features to help players work together. As previously mentioned, there are some new features coming soon that should help to address this.
Being a mostly explorer player myself, I have pondered a few times the idea of exploring with other players. I think that for those purposes, they will need a few additional new features ontop of the ones that are going to be with us soon.

But as I have said before, my most memorable experiences in ED so far have been with other players. But it is a game where you could choose to do as much or as little as you desire with other players; something I think is a positive note in my book.
I enjoy playing with other people when I can, and I also enjoy playing the game by myself. When a good few more group play features are introduced, it is simply a matter of how much you want to play with other people or not.

Again, to be honest, Elite: Dangerous is not the game for most people out there. For me it has been the perfect game for me to play, but for many people, they would simply not get the best enjoyment from it, especially with how so much of the game is in your imagination. Quiet bluntly, many people these days expect a game to tell them what to do, instead of having to fill in the blanks with ones own imaginations.

I'll jump in here and say there are many ways to control the game and all of the methods are very customisable. I use KB/M and have made a few changes in the stock set up.

My mouse wheel is now my throttle. My thumb buttons are target and previous target. I also swiched out my yaw and roll controls. Having roll on the mouse made my ship way unstable and hard to control during landings.

Elite is all about choices.
