CQC CQC - How do you play it

I'm looking forward to a lot of new things to learn. How to find the time to choose a different setup is certainly just one aspect. During the match I barely managed to choose another ship but before I was going to change the loadout the next game already started. As I said, I'm too slow and almost too old for that stuff but young players *must* love it! :)

Nah, I hope I'll see you around anytime, for lulz!

All CQC elite players I know are actually old timers. No young kids. Some are even in their 60s ;)

I am definitely against bots in CQC, no matter how tough it is. I rather be killed 1000 times than have this be just like any other gameplay. Every game is an experience, it's tougher with a keyboard, but it will always be achievable in some manner.

I guess the idea behind bots is a temporary solution to get that ship sailing, just to fill the gap of existing players. Once there's enough interest they could be removed again. An arena filled (partially or full) with bots is still better than an empty arena, don't you think so?

Before the last patch some people were saying that they needed bots to start the game. But it's no longer the case. Deathmatch needs only 2 people to start. No need for bots. People play CQC for hours and have no problems with finding the game.
The true nature of why some people wanted bots have been exposed, they simply want easy cqc where they always win.

Come on, that comes across a bit condescending don't you think?

And even to the extent that it's true, there's nothing wrong with it. I enjoy me some good CQC (less now than I used to, I've pretty much retired) but when I do play it always ends up as this super-intense battle against other experienced players. Sometimes you just want to relax and blow stuff up.

I'd love for Elite/CQC to get a challenge mode like Overload has, where you're fighting bots that steadily ramp up in number and difficulty until you're eventually overwhelmed.

Kind words, but I'm not really a skiller in CQC. There are many skilled CQC flyers, I would call myself a 'competent' CQC player, nothing more.

I live in Europe. I don't have much networking knowledge but I can say I often play with people from the USA (even Hawaii) and hardly ever experience any connection/rubber-banding issues in CQC [up]

It's not that common unless somebody has really bad internet.

MUSKETEER, last night I saw you in some of my CQC sessions and I must say, hopefully without sounding too devot, you are amazing! As it seems no one was a match for you and I kinda can understand why you stopped playing as you said. Also showed me there's a *very* long road ahead for me to become halfway competitive.

Now tell me you're not an European player and my worldview totally falls apart! ;) You know, I'm still very interested in the technical aspect of CQC or PvP in general and how this can work at all over a peer to peer connection with players living thousands of miles away and all this without rubber-banding or warping (all session were very fluid, indiscernible to me from a LAN party [up]).

The game handles it smoothly, but lag does end up mattering... ever notice that someone can do damage to you from what on your screen is >1km? That's because on his screen, he's closer. Figuring out how to deal with the effects of lag does end up mattering for high-level play.

How do you deal with that?

In my case, poorly. :)

Generally just being aware it's happening is helpful. If you're fighting someone from the other side of the planet, expect the delay. e.g. you need to chaff sooner, since there will be extra delay before it affects their aim.

The lag situation also generally favors the aggressor, the one making the first move, and that gets even more pronounced when it increases. e.g. if you and someone else are parked just outside of range of each other, you can boost into their range and start doing damage almost before they see it happening on their screen.

Excellent thread, a big thankyou to the devs for changing cqc in a positive manner! Its great to get a game without waiting for long. I play often, usually late on when the whisky has the better of me.i often just drift about watching the big guns, getting the feel. I dont care for badges etc, done various martial arts for years, never wear anything other than a white belt (catches some out ha ha ha!). Its been great to play with muskie, he has unwittingly taught me much. Its just a blast doing cqc, makes you better in game too i reckon.
Who cares if you are crap? eventually, i bet it will gradually all click, hasnt for me yet but I dont care. Its just great fun and a great new aspect to an altogether excellent game.

I've re-read some of your CQC posts, appreciate your approach. I'm 71 and like CQC, even more now I can find a match. I know the learning curve is always painful and there is no other way to get there, must be why there are fewer younger players in this part of ED. Look forward to your mentoring on the field of battle; fly fast and be dangerous Cmdr, o7!

I've never even fired up the CQC menu option. After reading this thread, I'm gonna give it a try. I'm a big ship pilot in the main game. I need to work on my small ship skills.

I am late to the party, but I would still like to add my five cents.

I think going to the CQC Discord voice channel is one of the best things a new player could do. Why? Because magic happens there. Because the angry growing frustration is replaced by shared laughter and humor. Instead of seeing the same a-hole kill you over and over, you almost hearing his condescending laughter, frustration seeping in, you discover there is actually a cool person on the other side of the cannons. He may back down when he feels you've had enough, you can ask him how is it possible that he kills you every time with barely a scratch on him and you'll find that you are laughing as he's screaming "On your tail!!!" and you evade him, hearing a satisfactory grumble as he lost you.

Being together on voice comm (and to a little lesser extent on text chat) changes the negative experience into a positive one. Painful grind into enjoyable social experience. Not only you'll enjoy the game more, you'll also get better faster.

I got some great advice from Steenpass in particular for example, and I think every CQC Discord veteran contributed with their wisdom at some point too.

P.S.: How did it go, Krash?

Hello, I'm playing CQC on PS4, first time their wasn't too much peaple, only a bully player killing me again and again... I was thinking I'm gonna win too when I will acces better ship... but... I did'nt needed better ship, only map learning, and better flight skill.
So I start to win, and he start to quit midgame when loosing... and CQC was dead for me... no one to play with me...
So I decide to be a bait... So I start to connect and tight my stic to fake that I'm playing so, all time a players try CQC, it works, so I invite him as friend, and make a message group to alert when playing CQC... and so on... Now we are more than 12 active players in a group of 80, and we even to TDM and CTF, I got all CQC trophees execpt the ELITE cqc one, got my rank prestige in 8 weeks.
And now prestige 2 rolling now as a CQC Hero for Legend and then ELITE !
I'm french and now more and more french joins me, we gonna have to make multiple wings and plays CTF or TDM.
DM are now pretty full ( chapter 4 make the open game bug... CQC is a great alternative... )
Check my channel; you will see someone who plays ELITE only for CQC training and will only go back to OPEN when he got his ELITE CQC rank :)
