So I tried my first ever CQC matches today, and I am honestly surprised this part of the game isn't better marketed/more used. It was amazing. However, I also have a great regret from my first match =D
My first match ended quickly: I got in about 30 seconds before it ended, so I got 1 kill and then got popped once myself. Second match went a bit better, tying for first 3/1. All's well, right? No.
See, I play in VR... and before the match I had been taking screenshots of my ship with the Quality settings set to Ultra (like Ultra for desktop, not VR); if I tried to play VR like this, the game would freak out under normal circumstances because my computer just can't handle it. So anyhow, I forgot to turn the quality back before playing CQC. The first match I noticed a little tearing, but the match was just around this small floating outpost so it wasn't too bad. Small area means less to load, plus it only lasted 30 seconds, so no biggie.
But the second match... it was in that ice astroid belt arena. Omfg. The game was jittery as all get out, graphical tearing everywhere, and I kept accidentally leaving the zone because I couldn't tell where I was. Luckily the red target squares are easy enough to see, and it's pretty easy to distinguish a rock vs the blackness of space, so I was about to play regardless. I got 3 kills and was about to end the match in first place with 0 deaths; for being my second match I was really happy with the results. So where did that 1 death suddenly come from? Self destruct because amongst all the tearing I accidentally bonked into an asteroid and launched off into the sunset; I couldn't figure out where the hell the arena began and end because everything was a giant mess of ripped voxels. ;_; I was sick as a dog by the time I got out of the match and really just wanted to tap out earlier, but I wasn't about to give up first place just because I didn't check my client settings lol.
Anyhow, it was a fun little match, despite my idiocy. It worked out nicely for me that they started me not only in an F-63 condor but also in an ice field. As it would happen, back when I was doing mining ops with some friends that the exact fighter I would bring with me and play around between the roids in when I got bored. =D Even with the game looking like a VCR tape getting eaten by the machine, I felt right at home.
So that's the story of my chaotic first impression of CQC. It was amazing fun and I'd probably still be doing it now, but instead I'm lying down to let the motion sickness pass =D. I'm hoping to have quite a few more matches in there, though, so expect to see more of me. I'm sure my beginner's luck will wear off soon, so for those who play this game mode: I look forward to getting blown up by ya!
