CQC CQC really needs some form of ELO or balancing to help get new players into it.

There are a few times I've managed to get together, through pure luck, a group of 4-8 players, playing CQC together. Generally speaking, I'll be among the best of them, so I try to challenge myself by using less-useful weapons or ships, and not always grabbing the bonuses instantly to keep things more even.

Unfortunately, pretty much every time I've managed to get such a group together, we eventually have one of a few players drop in. These players constantly cycle through shields, weapons, and stealth bonuses, use extremely powerful utilities like silent running, and proceed to mercilessly slaughter everyone.

Of course, this instantly kills the fun, and within a few games where most players have gotten 50-100 points and the newcomer has gotten 750 repeatedly, we all quit.

There really needs to be some way to keep those sorts of players out, while still allowing noobs to learn and have fun. The game isn't there to assuage the massacre fantasies of the elite.

I honestly believe these players have singlehandedly killed CQC. There's really good potential in the mode, for times like when you're waiting for a carrier to jump, but most players won't bother, because nobody plays, because everyone who tries never gets a chance to learn before they die.

So here's my idea; add an ELO system to the game. The more you win, the higher your ELO gets, and if it's too high, you can't instance with newer players anymore. At least that way, new players will have a chance to get better before getting to the point where they're being murdered en-masse.

Preventing people from matching with other players for any reason would make the matchmaking pool even smaller than it already is.

An auto-balance system would be nice for TDMs, to keep rookies from ending up on one team vs a whole team of veterans maybe. That, or private matches so you can play and learn with friends, even if they were unranked.

CQC was DOA the moment it was introduced as a separate mode, High skilled players didn't kill it Frontier did a good enough job of that alone, CQC has been out for five years now and adding an ELO to it now would be completely asinine and only result in people waiting longer for a match.

Like PP, VR and multi-crew it's a depreciated game feature and Frontier clearly have no interest in spending more than the bare minimum of dev time on it.

CQC server its purpose in that they got some money for developing assets they needed for the main game. Playing it as a new player CQC isnt fun at all due to what OP describes. Playing as a veteran isn't fun at all because if you manage to get a match, the odds are its going to be without any challenge. Adding a ranked system would work for new players, who are too few to make it worthwile for FD, while making it even harder for experienced players to find a match at all.

As Leo said, its just one more item on FD's graveyard of abandoned stuff. Which is a shame, because it had loads of potential which would have cost very little investment. Even just adding the option of some low-ranked AI opponents would have made things infinitely better.

The thing is, by getting more newer players in, eventually you also get more experienced players. But if you constantly screw the new players, you never have anyone for the experienced players to play with at all.

So in the short term, yeah, ELO would screw over the higher-ranked players, but in the long term it's best for everyone.

Spoiler: Fail

Spoiler II - that failed as well.

CQC has ELO, or something like it. But it doesn't strictly prevent matchmaking when populations are low (which they always are, and have been for most of its existence.)
