Crafting system like in earth and beyond

Basically in earth and beyond the system worked like this.

1. Mine or buy raw minerals/refined.metals
1.5. Convert raw minerals into their final refined state
2. Create components for items (capacitors , superconductors ect.)
3. Create item using a combination of said components and other things

you could create pretty much anything , engines , weapons , ammo for said weapons.

this would add a lot more fun for traders

Don't you need a team of engineers and factory equipment to craft things like engines? The idea of putting stuff together in a menu, now mix a little magic and poof a new engine or beam turret seems out of place.
But is fun in a fantasy world.
Maybe have processing or factory ships?

I don't want a crafting system in E:..D.

However, I'd love a chance to play E&B again. Lv139 Jenquai Explorer ...

I'm going to ask you a question, it is not ment to be an attack against you, i'm looking for an honest answer and rational debate.

so, why are you against a crafting system in Elite

In E.D. crafting should only be done by the major and minor factions not the players, the 1.1 patch concept of players deliviring materials to minor and independent systems for the production of a cap ship is a great concept, if said faction would be able to visibly construct said cap ship

why should crafting not be added?

Because we're pilots, not factory workers. It doesn't make any sense in the game world. make money not items. It's just wierd.

I love the idea.

If Guild/Corporate system is added later, group of player could be able to craft a outpost, then ships, weapons or commodity.

Or if a player want his own ship, we could imagine he rent a construction dock on a station, then carry all material needed.

We already have on-board refinery, why not on-board fabricator ?

Because the whole notion of "crafting" producing superior products compared to a whole planet full of specialized factories is the realm of fantasy/heroic games. It worked well in E&B because that was basically a fantasy game in space.

In a more realistic setting, "crafting" would be limited to products that aren't easily available from planetary industries - either because you're too far away, or because you're looking at an extremely uncommon piece of equipment (which isn't necessarily superior to more common pieces).

The other thing is that you don't go through equipment in Elite like you would do in EVE, where you'll want a couple of dozen identically-equipped ships parked in your hangar when you're starting PvP.

Well, the on-board refinery doesn't really refine anything. It's more like a big ore extractor. An actual refinery would function like a refinery economy, i.e. you put bertrandite in and it spits out beryllium.

im a paramedic, dosent mean i couldn't learn to black smith.

also, if that is your issue then build the crafting system around having to take a blueprint and materials to factory station and paying the factory to produce a certain number of them.
