The other day I was out exploring the outer edges of the galaxy (still am btw) when I found a 10G planet and decided to land on it as I had never landed on a 10G planet before. It ended badly.
It sucks, all that data gone, sent all the way back to Explorer's Anchorage, etc, etc....but, well stuff happens.
The incident got me thinking though. We have a couple of crash sites in the game, but would it perhaps be fun if our own "real" crashes could be added.
Imagine that a 1000 cdrs crash ever single week into a planet, that would be 52 000 crash sites a year - a sizeable number . But if you divide that number with the number of systems in the game, and divide that number again with the number of landable planets, you will get an extremely small figure. So finding such sites would be a rare event - even after a couple of decades.
Imagine further that having scanned a system with FSS you discover a crash site or an USS on a planet (or perhaps you must map a planet to do this).
You land at the crash site, what do you find? I suppose there would be salvage, and when you scan the data point the name of the crashed cdr would be revealed as well as the date of the crash. Considering the rarity of such finds then perhaps you could also download some of the discovery data the cdr had collected. This of course would be a fine prize for an explorer.
I am of course assuming that the necessary data is on the server....
I can see a couple of "buts" in connection with the idea, eg: Cdrs deliberately crashing in order to have their own cache of materials on hand. Would that be a problem? If so how big a problem? I am not sure it would be a big problem. It's going to cost you the effort of collecting materials (assuming the salvage is based on what was actually on the ship) as well as the cost of the ship. So yeah, somebody is bound to do that, but not many I suspect.
The biggest "but" is perhaps a cost/effect "but". Would it be worth the effort the devs would have to put into realising the idea?
