Crash to Desktop Regularly - Found the fix - Hope it helps someone else

My client was constantly crashing to desktop - hope this helps someone else. I was using Medium graphics with AMD Fix off.

It's a pretty basic and perhaps no brainer fix - but I'm not computer fluent, and I found no mention of this when I was searching through the forums looking for a fix. I hope this helps someone else, as I'm sure I wasn't the only person having this problem.

Basically, the game would load, but anytime it had to load something else, it would crash to desktop. I could not Frame Shift, continue or restart scenarios, and supercruise was hit or miss on if it would crash to desktop or not.

Another problem I had was choppy flight. The ship would go where I wanted it to, but it wasn't a smooth turn. The spinning station was also choppy as opposed to smooth.

I made a post in the hardware section asking which of my PC components I need to upgrade, and was told it was the game and not my hardware. Last night I changed graphics to low and turned on the AMD Fix, and it hasn't crashed since. I have to turn the AMD fix back off after a jump in order to know where the sun is to be sure I go around. When I turn the fix off, my game gets choppy again. Get around the sun, turn the fix back on, and we're smooth sailing.

Minor inconvenience, but it at least works. Now if only I could find a work-around to my terribad combat abilities...

Id go backwards on the gfx drivers. Get earlyre ones and try them. I always keep the last 10 sets of driver installs so I can swap and change as and when. As it is the latest beta drivers for my 280x's are doing fine.

I had quite a few problems with my AMD card and the fix I used was really simple. I changed the card for an Nvidia one and now there is no more issues.

sounds like you should ticket this. the AMD fix wasn't expected to be necessary any more (at least towards the end of the A4 phase), and lack of gfx bandwidth shouldn't cause CTD.

They responded today to the tickets I had created for these crash to desktop issues and told me my graphics drivers are horribly out of date, and that's the cause of my problems. I believe them as i don't even know what drivers are, but hopefully things will be better when I update the drivers later tonight with Google's help.

This will be extremely helpful I'm sure! Thanks! I'll buy you an Elite Beer for this if such a thing ever gets implemented.
