crashes tonight

anyone else having a lot of crashes tonight with the latest Alpha multiplayer?

ive had 3 drop outs to the crash report screen, 2 while in hyper jump and another when i tried to go silent running.

lots of hyper jump crashes, also had very low fps down to 2 in places when another Alpha backer was shooting me, needless to say i died.

I too suffered lots of crashes to desktop. But when I did manage to spend some time in Federal Combat Bond I just got griefed over and over again by a couple of human players. Thanks for that whoever you are.

Glad it's not just me! I was having loads of crashes and frame rate drops earlier. It was really bad in the Federal Combat Bond area where at times I would just get a slideshow. Also a few times there were two cruisers on the screen half joined together, really weird.

Griefing ruins the game

Same thing happened to me. First the base wouldn't let me launch, so had to exit and go back in. Then ED wouldn't start (stayed at the black screen with the ship in the middle rotating). Then when I finally could fly, went to the Federal Combat Bond and got griefed by a human player, and instead of respawning, ED kicked me to the desktop.

Of all that, the only thing that really bothers me is the griefing. The game is in Alpha, so game glitches are expected. Human players griefing other players is why I don't ever play PVP games. If this is typical for this game, I wasted a lot of money for nothing.

Yes wait and see if you get 6 cruisers joined together .
The network code is getting better .

From personal experience, it's hard to get an objective analysis on the current state of network code. As the reliability and speed of transfer appears at least somewhat dependent on server load, is it that load is relatively light at the moment (with more players waiting for Alpha 4 rather than testing)? Or is the code improving? Or is the new code to be introduced with Alpha 4?

I think I'll wait til Alpha 4 before I make any surmises on network performance.

I take it you took the plunge and got alpha then

yep i have Alpha as of Wednesday last week :)

dont regret it at all, i dont have access to the alpha forums yet as holidays and all. So just giving feedback in here at the minute.

yep exactly the same for me as well, last night seemed like there was a lot on the servers and it crawled.

PvP isn't griefing. PvP is a way to play the game, according to the rules of the game. I suggest you either kill whomever is attacjing you, or play the game in solo mode or one of the other modes suitable to you (in the full game).

About yesterday's game performance, it might be due to the fact that there was a multiplayer tests event ongoing yesterday, to provide feedback to Frontier on network performance. The game is in alpha after all, so you can be attacked.

The notification was provided via the forum. please report any crashes/bugs from yesterday to Frontier.

Its frustrating I know, but dont forget you are taking part in an anything goes COMBAT Alpha test. Being attacked is not being griefed. PvP combat is the whole point in this phase of the game's development

That's not a great way for the other to behave, and I'm sorry you've had a painful experience.

Part of the problem is that there are, literally, no rules and no consequences in alpha. It's not the game, it's barely "a fraction of a percent" of the game. As a result this sort of thing happens a lot.
Quite often the griefer will be testing something, other times they are just trying to irritate.

As the game becomes more complete this type of behaviour will become increasingly painful to do, and the players will be become increasingly spread out. Alpha is really (at the moment) trying to get combat and the netcode sorted. My guess is that's because that's by far the most challenging bit to do, so will need the most time. Combat isn't all of the game. PvP certainly isn't all of the game. If you really hate it, as and when groups come online just drop into the single player online group and you won't be troubled by it. Before you do, keep plugging away.

Also, I think there's a wipe before Alpha 4, so all your progress credit and ship wise will go at that point anyway (as will your attackers').

In short, sorry you had a bad time, stick with it.

I see the test was taking place to provide feedback and this is great and hence the fact i was also giving feedback and part of the reason i joined alpha, to help iron out issues.
Thats why i started this thread about last night to see how many suffered net problems and crashes as there were clearly more online players last night.
All my crashes and any anomalies are always reported straight to Frontier in the hope i may catch something they havent seen.
I expect problems with it being only an Alpha build at this stage of development and cant wait for the net release to see if some of the issues i experienced last night are on the way to being fixed.

I got into alpha just yesterday so i dont know if the issues im having is to be expected or as i see mentioned here if it was unusually bad last night.

But yeah, I was crashing all the time, sometimes when hyperjumping other times just by random without hint or warning.

Its been much better today, although im still suffering from what might be a memory leak or something. Im playing and Everything is really smooth and have been for half an hour or so, then things just starts to stutter more and more until the game is unplayable.

A Quick restart and its okay again =)

Oh i get that quite a lot generally in federal bond in fact oddly last night was one of my least buggy nights weird.
Also i did kill a player last night first one ever. However he was in federal combat bond sat there firing his laser at the cruiser at first i shot him by mistake because well i thought he was a pirate... then i figured i best finish him off in case he got nasty ! Hope it wasnt you though havent suffered much from griefing myself wgich considering we are all locked together in a confined space is a small miracle.

Piracy is a big thing in this game and even though you will be able to take precautions against it, you will never be able to fully protect yourself against it.
As of now, the game is very limited both in things to do and places to be.
At full release, there will be more or less limitless places for you to explore.

But imagine your out exploring distant star systems, and while cruising around scanning NPCs, an outlined blip comes up on your radar.
Will you approach? Or run away?
Think he/she will be friendly and possibly trade with you?
Better to plot a new jump right away and just not bother? You DO have a big load of valuable stuff in your cargo, but maybe he/she doesnt have a cargo scanner.

The decisions, and the tension. That is what makes it so great!

Griefing...yeah you ain't gonna stop that in any game I'm afraid.

Online games are cool, online people aren't... never forget this.

You have not wasted money, you will be able to turn other players 'off' so to speak with the grouping system, also remember that this game is heavily instanced.

Networks Busy

I'm hoping that as more locations are added, players will be spread out more and the networking side of things will improve. For instance, when in fed combat bond and network is slow (big lags), flying far enough away sorts things out.
