Crime Doesn't Pay But Cost, then Cost, then Cost, then Cost some more... 1 stolen Combat Stabilizer!

I made a thread on precisely this issue yesterday, it's not getting caught docking that's the problem....it's getting scanned while at the nav beacon. Now you could go hunt exclusively at pure anarchy systems but that's very restrictive and takes the fun out of the game.

Silent running isn't a guarantee against being scanned. Go to your modules and switch all of them off save your sensors and thrusters...which is really all you need. Maybe the shields as well if one is a competent pilot. I have around a 98% success rate with infiltrating stations this way. I make most of my income via smuggling and bounty hunting.

The worst part isn't fines, it's that even if every victim immediately dumped the most profitable cargo in the game, the time it would take to find that victim and scoop the cargo would make you a small fraction of the cash you could have made trading legally in the same amount of time, except even worse since stolen goods can only be sold at half market value.

Sure. Trading illegal goods its all about fun! :D

I partook in my first bout of Pirating over the weekend, I'd found a nice Outpost with Black market in between Fed and Imperial space. Interdicted an NPC type 9 who got mad and decided to fight back which was great for me as it gave me time to cargo scan, and ooo! he's carrying Rares!
-
It didn't take me long to take out his shields and hatch and all his cargo started to leak out except I didn't notice the message he sent about running away and kept firing, when he got to 10% hull he abandoned his escape and went in to death charge mode. I didn't want to kill him as I needed to keep the fines as low as possible, trying to collect cargo whilst someone shoots at you certainly adds a bit of spice to the usually dull procedure, then just as I scooped the 9th and last Rare canister the Feds dropped in, two Vipers just out of range. I closed my hatch and beat a hasty retreat. Success!

I got 50k for the 9 tonnes of Rares and only a 300cr fine for 15 mins work in a Cobra. I know this was my first and only time Pirating but all in all I made a good profit and had great fun...!

This is amazing!! Loving the smuggling tips and stories. I'd been searching for a good thread... THANKS GUYS <3

My husband and I decided on a little Valentine's Day Massacre Experiment hoping to make 1.1 a little fun again!
~
I'd been dabbling in picking up a few cans at Nav Beacons in my Expert flown and A class fitted Viper here and there before the Evil 1.1] Patch. Bounty hunting had been sucking lately and having to DOWNGRADE highest level fittings just to meet new power demands was depressing, but we were determined to have FUN!
~
So, he in his Viper and me in my 32 slot Cobra (alt ship) went hunting at a Nav Beacon. We shot everyone's cargo bays... I picked up 32 items trying to be careful not to pick up things I new were illegal, mostly minerals, metals, prototype tech etc.
~
Found a black market station (the orbital kind) next door. Figured I might get a slap on the wrist fine (this is how it was before the patch if you didn't go to an anarchy outpost), but I knew the prices would pay better than the anarchy guys who hated me for all my goody faction with Federation. Got scanned and told I was getting around a 7.5k fine, MEH, but OK. Sold my loot for 80k, went to check my missions and Nav panel only to find I had incurred a 154,000cr Federation Fine! WOAH, WHAT?!
~
OK, this really sucked pixel balls, but I did some research and found out Combat Stabilizers were illegal at that station! OK, so maybe that was it, who would have thunk something so harmlessly named would be illegal. So, I logged out just needing a break from the newfound hurt...
~
Logged back in some 8 hours later, realized that I forgot to complete 2 missions, oh well, off to do the one I still had...
~
Went to dock and complete said mission in another system and (empty hold) got ANOTHER 5+k Federation FINE, plus noticed when I turned in the mission, I'd lost over a months worth of faction!
~
So, Station Fine, Federation Fine, Another Federation Fine, and Faction Loss. Is this some sick lesson/joke to trying to be a smuggler?
~
I will say, despite the horridness, I was not blown up on sight, so at least that's something, although perhaps would have been cheaper in the long run.
~
ANYONE able to still make it as a smuggler Post 1.1? I was reading that any/all NPC? ships that scan you can report you for picking up space junk... if this is what is adding more than 50cr fine per scan, the developers need a LIFE. Any idea how long it takes to fly around and scoop crap? You're *always* getting scanned!
~
Cost of being a smuggler, PROHIBITIVE.
Time spent with husband, PRICELESS. (and this can be done anywhere else besides HERE)

If you get scanned carrying ANYTHING that you have taken from another ship, you're getting fined.

Look at your right hand user interface, then go to the cargo tab after you have picked up some random USS floating cargo. Notice that it says the cargo you just picked up is stolen? That's because it does not belong to you....

:)

The motto to remember is to never get scanned.

Silent running, yawnfest. :)
Just get lined up 5km out, full throttle, boost, and then throttle off. You can use landing gear to slow you down if needed more. You rarely ever even get scanned, and if you do, you're thru the entrance in 2 secs (it takes 10 secs for a scan)
It's an absolute doddle in a cobra, you'll get no where near the back wall. Not quite as easy in a T9, but can be done.
As has been said, know your ship. :D

smuggling is hard and not very profitable.... and usually black markets pay better than the legal way... and cost more at the same time. but they dont in elite.

as for smuggling itself stay at least 13km away from the station line your self up with the door have hubby check to see cost clear and gun it. about 3km away you want to go zero throttle.

if you get scan warning count 3 seconds into it then go silent running this will cause loss of lock on you and gain another 13 seconds at least..

pray that no big butts get in your way as you glide threw the door way.

once you get inside station your safe exit silent running and find your pad.

Nope! Fined in space!!!

Yeah, for that kind of fine you could have destroyed 30 Ships of any size, paid off your bounty-fines on the next Outpost - and walk away Clean like a Saint...

Smuggling is by far the worst crime you can commit in this Game.
And just wait until you realize what Reputation loss you incurred with that single, one-off event :D

Just got 5308cr fine from ship SCAN IN SPACE at a Nav beacon with wanted folks flying around. AND checked Faction Big RED DOWN ARROW. I am carrying only ONE can of tobacco.

SERIOUSLY?! That's ridiculous! Silent running? Oh yeah good for 15-20 seconds, not IN SPACE...

Fix the game Frontier, please.

Hubby is also getting picked on by red ships that keep shooting and never get wanted even with reports turned ON. I've witnessed this firsthand now at a beacon. I'm scanning whole time and just seeing "Clean".

Not sure what you mean by "in space" as the entire game is in space, but as I mentioned in my earlier reply - any illegal cargo you carry will net you a fine equal to it's full value. Tobacco is ~5k so that sounds about right if you had 1t.

Out at a Nav Beacon = in space VS Docking at a station
~
A station that prohibits certain goods I'm OK with getting fined, but the pop up message happened while flying around at a Nav beacon.

Too bad the programmers can't program distinguished goods between Wanted criminal drops and innocent drops.
