Criminal record

I drop out at a USS site and shortly after three ships join me. A Lakon starts firing at me so I kill him (all three of the ships have turned red in the scanner at this point). A sidey attacks me so I kill him too. I got bounties for both. The third ship is a Cobra, still showing red, so I open fire and kill that one (no bounty).

I now find there is a 200Cr bounty on my head! Is that because I opened fire on the third ship before it shot at me? It was showing red so my scanner thought it was an enemy. Is this a bug or are such pre-emptive strikes really illegal?

If you did fire on the third who didn't have a bounty before he got a wanted status then you would get a 200cr assault charge. Preemptive is illegal however its risk vs reward - reward is advantage in the fight vs risk of the police taking an interest.

It's only 200Cr, right?
It doesn't affect your rep or anything that much... does it?

Had to pay 300Cr to cancel it. I'm currently trying out a few possible "careers". If I want to be a bounty hunter the important thing to remember is: scan before you shoot!

Btw: if the ordinary scan tells you it's a bad guy what's the point of a K-Warrant scanner?

Actually, scratch that - It does affect you...

I took a mission to go find and kill 5 Feds across 3 systems. I only visited teh one, but dropped 9 of them to be sure. I never got a single voucher, but I did get 200Cr fine every time I shot one and 600Cr for killing one.

I left the fines unpaid and now I'm WANTED in Fed space, with a 20,000 Cr bounty on my hide!!!

If someone is clean before you scan with a kw scanner they will be after. So it won't turn them into a legal kill. There bounty in the local area is already shown and won't change.

What it does show is any extra bounties from other jurisdictions that are hidden, meaning if you do kill them, you may get paid by other places.

There local legal status remains unchanged.

True, I'm afraid. I remember reading somewhere that unpaid fines eventually convert into a price on your head. It's a hell of a bounty, not sure how you can get rid of that!

Hmmm... so it's a matter of working out the profit. If the bounty in the other jurisdictions is big enough it would be worth killing him and paying off the local fine from your winnings! You would still have to travel to each jurisdiction where he was wanted to collect the vouchers so perhaps you should count in fuel and ammo costs. I think I need an accountant in the second seat of my cobra!

Or hunt bounties in an anarchy where you won't accrue any penalties :) When bounty hunting in LP98 you pick up vouchers for Fedration, Eranin, and Asellus Primus.
