Criticism: Worried about release and decided not to pre-order

Yeah this is a bit of a controversial opinion but decided to post it anyway.

I was Planet Coaster 1 early bird and did not regret getting the first game early. But for Planet Coaster 2 i'm a bit worried. First of is that pre-ordering is something that a company has to prove is worth it for you. Planet Coaster 1 was a good game I did not regret getting early, but from what I have seen Frontier do lately I am a bit concerned.

I made unfortunately the same mistake with Cities Skylines 2 where I pre-ordered it and still to this day I haven't played it for more than an hour because of how bad the sequel was. While in Cities Skylines 1 I have hundreds of hours. Because I think companies now a days make the same type of mistakes in sequels where they just have to be pushed out fast without thinking things through.

Now Frontier has proven with Planet Coaster 1 that they really nailed the Theme Park sim and Coaster Builder genre. However they have made a few missteps in my opinion later.

My biggest concern was the console version. Theme park sims or complex creative games just aren't a fit for a controller. The only way to make this possible is to dumb down the game. Now from what I have seen in the videos of Planet Coaster 2, this seems to be the case. The UI is really aimed at console controllers and everywhere I look I see people complain about it already. If the UI is not fixed for the release of the Planet Coaster 2 PC version, i'm afraid I will get frustrated very quickly with the game. Why can't we still have custom inputs for things like angle snap and so on? It seems like a console game and not a PC game. PC players are often used to designer software, so for us things like custom input fields is completely normal and even needed. Yet we are very limited because the game is dumbed down for consoles.

The same is the whole Workshop ordeal. PC gamers love the Steam Workshop. But Frontier was stubborn and decided not do implement it. Mostly because they want to focus more on consoles, while we already know that most people are PC players and they are not gonna be happy with it. They try to reinvent the wheel because they want the cross platform stuff, but from the looks of it it goes at the cost of the PC players.

Another thing was the whole subscription pass they introduced a few years ago where you could rent DLC, showing that money is the main factor for them and not innovating.

When I think about all of these things combined, I feel like I need to protect myself and also protect other PC gamers by just playing it safe.

I hope to be proven wrong, and that Planet Coaster 2 PC version will be awesome (from the start or very soon after). But when I think about all these things combined, I think I just need to be a little careful.

So yeah, that's why I make this thread, to hopefully make others aware and to motivate Frontier to not forget about the PC players. I feel game studios, or mostly publishers, now a days are too focussed on numbers and while understandably it's a business, it has been proven again and again it will bite them in the ass sooner than later.

Thanks for reading

I am sure we will find out how it plays, if the game is released. I totally get your points and concerns. All i know for sure is, that planet coaster and planet zoo development ended not with the release. There were many updates to make the game better.
I am sure Planet Coaster 2 will not be a second disaster like C:S2 :D
I did pre-ordered for my girlfriend and myself because we love the planet games and wanted to show our support to the planco2 dev-team.
For the cross-plattform workshop thingie, i think it is something new to discover. I am excited about that.
I can't say much about the UI issues, but have trust in all the play-tester to give the right feedback, so it can be changed.
As long as i don't see a total fail in anything.. I am on the positive side of expections :)

I really wanted working waterslides and pools, and PC2 has them. I also see a lot of old rides are returning, and some new ones. And there are new features not in the old game. But what is replacing the workshop to download parks and blueprints? I already pre-ordered to get the bonus rides. I just need a 6 or 8gb video card I'll find a cheap used one, and Windows 10. I'm guessing it won't work on Win 8.1 and a 3gb video card and Direct X 11.

Frontier uses their own workshop or something because they want cross platform so you can make something on PC and people on Playstation can download and play it.
However from the looks of it it goes at the cost of PC player freedom. The UI and stuff is very basic and console oriented.

So it's a step backwards from 1? But it has new things that weren't in 1. This type of game is meant to be played with a mouse not a clunky Xbox controller or PS pad. Why is the game on Steam then if the workshop won't be there?

Because probably some suit upstairs that has no actual experience developing or even playing games looked at some numbers and thought this would be a smart move.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to try it for myself. But I have to buy hardware like a 6 or 8 gb video card and maybe a new computer with win 11 to play it. My current computer has win 8.1. PC1 works on that but it looks like PC2 won't work on anything below win 10 and below a 6gb graphics card, my current one is a 3gb. The only way I can get working waterparks on Win 8.1 is to go back to RCT3. But they look worse than PC2 because of the dated graphics.

I think it is time for an upgrade anyway. The components in my system are also old, 10yr old PSU, 8yr old CPU and 5yr old GPU so i'm barely above minimum requirements.
But windows 10 has been a thing for quite some time now, windows 11 already exists.
