Cross-Platform play. Please make this happen.

I have played Elite Dangerous across 3 platforms. First with the PC, then onto Xbox One and finally docking down on PlayStation 4. As the years have gone by, I have found myself coming across fewer and fewer players on the console, and when I do, they're usually the same people I have seen before. I know that Solo, Private Group and Open fragment the playerbase, and that the sheer scale of Elite's Universe drastically spreads out those who are still playing; however, even in popular mining systems I am rarely ever seeing another commander. In Deciat and Shinrarta as of late, I rarely see as many players passing through. It could just be my observation, but I do worry that the active playerbase on console is growing stale and it becomes my greatest worry that the game might be mostly left forgotten once the next gen comes to home and players move on.

It is therefore my sincerest wish that Frontier bring the Elite Universe together via cross platform play in a future update. Even if only limited to the console players across Xbox and PlayStation. Ideally, should they allow console and PC players to come together, then the life of Elite Dangerous might suddenly shine brightly once more for us all. For me, that would be a dream come true.

Yeah they should at least let us console plebians team up so we can all be ignored in one place👍

People that whine about unfair PC macros, K&M etc etc are most likely hiding in solo or PG 99.9% of the time anyway imo🤷‍♂️

Lets do this! Tho i believe there is more chance of getting a Thargoid storyline than X-play tbh🤦‍♂️

First - I don't think it's Frontier only related issue. I read some time ago about other game going cross-platform but it was without one console since (PS it was iirc) them not wanting to share the code to make it work. So we may want it, Frontier may want it but also MS from X-Box side and Sony from PS side need to want it as well. The problem is wider and deeper than it looks.

Second - as merging console players into one environment wouldn't cause much issues (gameplay wise), matching consoles against PC would surely cause something. Consoles accusing PC for unfair K+M snipe precision and accuracy, while PC accusing consoles for aim assists. Without any solid talks on high chair I wouldn't expect it to happen in near future.

There is one aspect of cross platform in the game already, PC and PS can share a Fleet Carrier to some extent. I have yet to figure out how to create friends or wings between the two.
Accident, first step to true cross platform? only time will tell........... I expect lots of time required :(

They aren't cross platform in the same way stars, planets and stations aren't cross platform, players from PC, PS4 and Xbox can scoop from the same stars, visit the same station and land on the same planet, but can't interact because that's not what cross-platform is.

Here you go OP, 8 pages of the exact same discussion from just 3 days ago, for your delight and delictation!

I play on PC,
  • should I complain that I don't want to be matched with KBM players, because it's unfair?
  • Or have VR users only match with other VR users, because it's unfair.?
  • Or should I only match with other HOTAS users?
  • Or, other users who have the same graphics settings as me?
  • Or, I should only match with users with the same frame rate as I have?
If we still think KBM is OP, well, Consoles support KBM control in other games. So control preference is really not a cross play issue, nor should it be a barrier.

And this isn't an MS or Sony issue either, as plenty of other games are implementing cross play. Even Destiny has cross save.

Based on the facts, we can only assume that Frontier

a) don't want it, or
b) cannot implement it.

CROSS PLAY OR RIOT!
Given that we're going to have a riot when Odyssey is released, anyway...we might as well combine the two events into one spectacular butthurt customer feedback loop showcase!

Or c) and probably more likely... have misdirected the development effort elsewhere (on walking around collecting flowers)
Oi! "...collecting flowers?!!!!!" Pfft! Don't be so cynical....

"Walking 'round obtaining & discovering plant samples with a Dyson hand-held thingamajig", actually!
Oh ye of little faith....just look at these testimonies of some influencers with early access:

"It's going to be fugging AWESOME!!!" - Alan Titchmarsh

"One giant leap for middle-aged gardenerkind" - Kim Wilde

"Has anyone seen my bra?" - Charlie Dimmock

"Forsooth, the gameplay mechanics are a vegetable veritable triumph" - Lancelot 'Capability' Brown

I'm waiting until I hear Monty Don's opinion before I buy it.

No, it would be a disaster waiting to happen for the Odyssey update, since console players will be pitted against PC gamer's playing at 120-144 FPS. In space, it might not matter that much, but with the addition of space legs and first person shooting, PC gamer's will have certainly have the advantage.

Who cares for the most part. It beats a dead game. Fortnite thrives despite being put against PC players using keyboard and mouse.
