cross-platform query

can you play cross-platform (PC & Xbone) if you're in a private group?
I don't think so, Braben said XBox users and PC/MAC users will not be able to interact (edit: interact directly, we all share the same galaxy but that is as far as the interaction goes).

I kinda hoping that FD have coded the game so that Xbone players will present themselves to PC/MAC users as Thargoids. ;)

Today it was confirmed that there's no xbox-PC crossplay.

I won't lie and say I wasn't happy to hear that but who knows, they may change their mind one day.

I understand that from the 'open play' point of view - but does the same apply for private groups?

can you at least add XBoners as friends to your friends list?

My best mate has bought a copy. Literally the only person I know in real life who will also play. I'm PC, he's XBone.

Would be a shame if we can never team up

Is this still something that Microsoft don't allow?

Also, I've seen mention of the Xbox version having smaller instance sizes. If that is true it wouldn't work (unless it only match made you with an Xbox player if the instance remained within their limit I suppose)

This was discussed a couple of months ago, and David Braben said that whilst XB1 players will be part of the same galaxy, i.e. their influence on everything from "first discovered by" to PowerPlay will be identical, that they will always be instanced separately from PC/Mac players. The reason for this is that every update to the Xbox One game goes via the Xbox Store, and must be accredited by Microsoft before release, whilst the PC/Mac version is controlled directly by FD via Launcher. Having two clients running different versions would result in inconsistencies, so the solution is to have them always instance separately.

--EDIT-- It looks as though the Xbox One version connects to the same Matchmaker servers as the PC/Mac version, although there's a graphical glitch just now which means the server information is partly off-screen in the Xbox client, so it can't be read properly. :) Once that's sorted out, I'll be able to compare the two. (My Xbox and gaming PC are hooked up to a nice big telly with Picture-in-Picture, so I'll have ED running side-by-side on the same telly twice.

I am happy to hear that.

I am not happy to hear that they will influence the same universe. They should have their own separate version. As has been mentioned elsewhere if the number of console players becomes greater than the PC/Mac players they will be exercising greater influence on the background simulation. Political balance, community goals, availability of trading resources may all change around us without any idea sign what is causing the changes and no way to counter them. We will have lost control of our own playing environment.

I don't understand what the difference is though. The Xbox game is the same as the PC game is the same as the Mac game from the point of view of the background simulation. What's the "they" and "them" here? You're being discriminatory towards console players as a group if you think you "our game" is different to "their game". It's all "our game".

I would like to see multiplatforms access to the same galaxy, I am sure technically it would be possible.
The more commanders the better :)

I don't think he's discriminating, but I think he means it's a bit like the Open/PG/Solo discussion. There are some advantages and disadvantages to having your playerbase split between these modes already and adding a new separate environment to that list. Personally I think it's a pity neither PC nor XB1 will be able to meet face to face for the time being.

yeah.. maybe one day the console patch bureaucracy will be no more and we can have cross play.
The more the merrier

So I have conflicting views on this.

On one hand you can say it's wrong, because basically they will be in their own Universe but effecting the one the PC/Mac players are in. The simple fact that there is not even an option to coexist in the same Universe should mean the Xbox users should have their own Universe separate from the PC/Mac platform. The Xbox users could also state a case that they are paying for a "new" game but are actually getting a "used" one. The PC/Mac players have already shaped and formed the Galaxy in a certain way. The Explorers have already laid claim to some of the most prized areas. All of civilized space has been explored. Factions and systems have been expanded or eliminated. For the new traders, the hunt for those prized systems will taken, as most, if not all, have already been discovered. Even the Powers have already been affected massively. I know there has been a lot of controversy over the 5th column tactic, imagine an entire Xbox player faction doing this? The devs still have yet to state whether it is an exploit or not and with their history of not commenting on similar issues (submit, high wake) it is likely going to be left as is. Other issues that come into play is what if an Xbox player faction moves into an area that a PC/Mac faction already exists? They will be fighting each other in some cold war of attrition because the only thing they can do is push influences, they won't be able to PvP their enemy.

On the other hand you can say that the new influx of players will be balanced and all things will remain equal. There will be an equal number of people for any cause as there is against it, just as it is now. Things may get jostled around a little bit but everything will settle as players settle in. You can also say this is no different than players playing in Solo or a Private Group. It's an intended game mechanic and we may not agree but we have all had to deal with it and have found a way to do so.

One things is for certain. Time will tell and we shall see how this shakes out in the end.

The issue I have with this horrible "us" and "them" thing, is that I'm both. I'll be playing (well, I _have_ been playing) on my Xbox One in the mornings, as it's not waking anyone up. I can play on my gaming PC in the evening, and my PC at work at lunchtime. If I pick up some rares on my Xbox I should be able to drop them off on my PC. Simple as that. So there _IS_ no "us" and "them". There _IS_ just "us". Same player. Same game. Same galaxy. Simple.

So you can log into the same character from your PC or your Xbox? Interesting. I would not think that would be possible.
